Description

Mantel at Gallagher House, c. 1986. This black and white photograph shows the fireplace mantel at the Gallagher House. The left-hand corner of the mantel is pointing directly toward the camera, and the camera is quite close to this corner. The fireplace is made of brick, and the mantel appears to be made of wood. On the corner of the mantel pointing toward the camera is a shallow bowl with pinback buttons in it. These buttons have "TUIT" printed on the front. A small handwritten sign sitting on the bowl reads "Please - Take a TUIT and save 15% at: BJ's Paint & Place Tumwater." A business card is on the mantel to the left of the bowl of buttons, and farther to the left is a postcard-sized piece of paper. To the right of the bowl of buttons is a stack of signs similar to the one sitting on the bowl of buttons. Farther to the right is a bouquet of what appear to be roses. Still farther to the right is a can of Pepsi sitting on top of a rumpled napkin. The reverse side of this photograph is blank aside from the accession number in the lower-right corner. The Gallagher House was built in either late 1896 or early 1897 at what later became the intersection of Carpenter Road and Pacific Avenue in Lacey, Washington, most likely by William B. Chamberlin. By 1900, the home had been repossessed by Alameda Rowe, the original owner of the land on which the home was built. Rowe turned the house and the adjoining property over to relatives in 1902, who then sold the house and property to Cornelius and Anna Gallagher in 1908. The Gallaghers lived in the home until Cornelius passed away in 1950. The house then changed hands to Harold and Millie Crass, who then sold it to Abner and Hazel Hukee in 1959. In 1985, the house was donated to the Lacey Historical Society, who moved the house to a piece of property adjacent to the Lacey Museum on Lacey Street. The house was subsequently rented out by the Lacey Historical Society until it was sold to a private buyer in 2018.
