Description

Steve Lewis at Gallagher House, c. 1986. This color photograph shows Steve Lewis painting an interior wall of the Gallagher House. Mr. Lewis is on the left-hand side of the image, and his body is oriented toward the right-hand side of the image. He is turning his head to his right to look toward the camera. He is holding a small paint brush in his right hand near to the wall in front of him. He has dark brown hair and is wearing a white t-shirt with dark bands at the neck and sleeve ends. He is also wearing blue jeans. Behind Mr. Lewis is an open doorway into another room. Near this open doorway is a short ladder with a paint tray on top. On the right-hand side of the image is the top-left corner of the house's fireplace. The mantel is covered with gray paper. Two rolls of masking tape are on the mantel. Written at the center of the reverse side of this photograph is "Steve Lewis." Written in the lower-right corner of the reverse side of this photograph is the accession number. The Gallagher House was built in either late 1896 or early 1897 at what later became the intersection of Carpenter Road and Pacific Avenue in Lacey, Washington, most likely by William B. Chamberlin. By 1900, the home had been repossessed by Alameda Rowe, the original owner of the land on which the home was built. Rowe turned the house and the adjoining property over to relatives in 1902, who then sold the house and property to Cornelius and Anna Gallagher in 1908. The Gallaghers lived in the home until Cornelius passed away in 1950. The house then changed hands to Harold and Millie Crass, who then sold it to Abner and Hazel Hukee in 1959. In 1985, the house was donated to the Lacey Historical Society, who moved the house to a piece of property adjacent to the Lacey Museum on Lacey Street. The house was subsequently rented out by the Lacey Historical Society until it was sold to a private buyer in 2018.
