Sons of Italy, 1973. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show portrait-style shots of three different men, and a man and a woman separately posing next to a small building. Note that at least one of the men shown here (Art Getchman) were not members of the Sons of Italy.
Image 36 shows an older man standing outside of a home or small business building. He is wearing a baseball-style cap which has a circular patch on the front which reads "CAPITOL CITY GOLF CLUB OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON." The man is wearing glasses and a button-up, collared shirt. The man is shown from the chest up. The structure behind the man has many windows and the roof projects out past the exterior wall toward the man. The man is facing the camera. Image 37 is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer appears to have moved closer to the building. The man is now facing toward the right-hand side of the image. The only portions of the building which are visible here are a small portion of the building's roof and the railing of a porch or deck. These are at the left-hand side of the image. A large parking lot is visible in the background. Image 43 shows a different man (Art Getchman) speaking on the telephone. The man is balding and is wearing a suit and diagonally-striped tie. He is smiling. He is holding the telephone handset in his left hand, and he is facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. He is shown from the chest up. Image 44 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved slightly closer to the man and the image is looking upward toward the man's face. Image 1 shows a woman posing outside of a small building which is under construction, or being renovated. The woman is wearing an unusual brimmed hat, a medium-length, thin jacket and checkered pants. The building has a flat roof which is flared downward around the sides. The building appears to be square, with two identical arched windows on each side. Lumber has been propped up around the edge of the building at chest height, creating a rough bar or serving counter on the exterior of the building. A work table has been created next to the building using two sawhorses and a piece of plywood. The woman is reaching out and touching some curling decorative elements which are attached to the building alongside the windows. Image 2 shows a man in vertically pinstriped overalls standing outside of the building seen in the previous image. He is posing similarly to the woman in the previous image, but he is touching the curling decorative element which is to the left of the one the woman was touching. His hair is wavy and slicked back, and he is looking toward the camera and smiling. The photographer has zoomed in or moved closer to the subject than in the previous image. The man is visible from the mid-thigh up. Image 3 is similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking toward the building. The photographer has zoomed back out to frame the image very similarly to image 1. Image 4 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved even farther away from the building. A dog is standing to the left of the man and looking in the general direction of the camera. Image 5 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking toward the camera and the dog is sniffing at the ground. Image 6 shows a man with glasses, a mustache and long sideburns laughing. He is wearing a dress shirt and tie, and he is facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. He is shown from the chest up. Image 7 is similar to the previous image, but here the man has tipped his head backward slightly. He is smiling, but not laughing. Image 8 shows the same man as in the previous two images, but here he is shown from the waist up. He is facing directly toward the camera and is smiling.Made/Created
