Description

Railroad Workers, 1973. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show two men posing next to a rail car and either opening or closing a large door on the rail car. Image 2 shows two men manipulating the large, lever-type handles of a door on the side of the rail car. When capturing this image, the photographer was standing with the rail car immediately to their left. The man closer to the camera is wearing glasses and a cap and has the sleeves of his shirt rolled up. He is facing away from the camera. The man farther from the camera is wearing glasses, a short-sleeved dress shirt and a diagonally-striped tie. His face is turned partially toward the camera. Printed on the side of the rail car is "CUSHION-PAK" "PLATE C" and "LEASED TO PLYWOOD MARKETING ASSOCIATES." Other text concerning the operation of the doors is also printed on the rail car farther from the camera. Image 3 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved farther away from the two men. Image 4 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has stepped back from the rail car by approximately six feet. Image 5 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved closer to the two men, and is nearly standing behind them. Image 6 shows the two men standing next to the rail car, but not touching the handles on the door. The man in the cap is facing away from the camera and is crossing his arms. The man in the tie is facing toward the camera with his arms down at his sides. Image 7 shows the man in the tie is touching the side of the train with his left hand. The man in the cap is farther to the right, and he has one hand and one foot on a small ladder attached to the train car. Image 8 shows the men in the same position as in the previous image, but here the photographer has either zoomed out or moved farther away from the two men.
