TIN-0001Description
Clear glass rectangular battery jar for an Exide farm lighting cell. Although some jars had rubber or wooden covers, this jar appears to be designed to be used with no cover (an open jar). Positive and negative plates were immersed in a sulfuric acid solution and kept apart by grooved wooden separators. "Hold-downs" were clamped onto the glass and extended across the top of the glass to keep the separators from floating. The connectors from the positive and negative plates extended above the top of the jar. Lighting cells such as this were set in one place (as opposed to the movement and jolting of an automobile battery) and thus could be made of glass. Embossed on each side is "Excide" and "made in U.S.A." On the bottom is "KXG5" and "2". There are mold seams on opposite corners that extend up to the open top. There are horizontal seams at the bottom and below a protruding lip at the top. There are marks on the sides and ends that probably came from clamping on the "hold-downs".Made/Created
