Description

The Third Moto, 1973. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show the interior and exterior of a motorcycle and motorcycle accessory store called "The Third Moto." Image 18 shows a man with medium-length hair and a mustache seated on the back of a motorcycle on display in the store. He is wearing a collared, button-up shirt and jeans. He is wearing a ring on his left ring finger. Both of his hands are resting on his right thigh. Behind the man is a row of motorcycles lined up with the one he is sitting on. This row of motorcycles is lined up along a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. In the foreground of the image on the left-hand side is a vertical display of motorcycle helmets. A very similar helmet display is in the background of the image near to the right-hand edge. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 19 is very similar to image 18, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 20 is very similar to image 18, but here the photographer has zoomed out or moved back from the man seated on the motorcycle. Image 21 shows the man from the previous images standing and posing for a photo. The vertical display of helmets nearest to the man in the previous images is now directly behind him and partially obscured from view by him. Two motorcycles are partially visible at the bottom of the image. Through a window behind the man a parking lot is visible. Parked in a parking spot immediately outside of the window is a car with its front end facing the camera. The license plate for the car is "JBE 733." This image is oriented horizontally. Image 22 is very similar to image 21, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 23 shows the exterior of the motorcycle shop. The exterior of the building appears to be constructed from concrete and brick. Almost the entire front of the store and most of left-hand wall are floor-to-ceiling windows. Along the top of the front of the building is a sign which reads "The Third Moto." Partially visible along the right-hand side of the image are a parked motorcycle and a parked car. Partially visible parked along the far side of the building is a pickup truck with a canopy. The front-left corner of the building is the corner nearest to the camera. Image 24 also shows the exterior of the shop, but here the photographer has moved farther away from the building. Here the left-hand side of the building is completely visible. Signs for two stores are visible along the left-hand side of the building. These signs are advertising a Polaris snowmobile shop and a Stihl chainsaw shop. Here the motorcycle parked in front of the motorcycle shop is completely visible. The car and pickup truck parked outside of the shop are partially visible at the right-hand side of the image. Image 25 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has again moved farther away from the building. The motorcycle shop building is within the right-hand 2/3 of the image. The parked car is completely visible, and there is a man opening or closing the trunk of the car. The Third Moto was a motorcycle and motorcycle accessory store which opened in mid-1973. The store was located at 3725 Pacific Avenue Southeast in Olympia, Washington. By 1978, the store had moved to, or opened a second location at, 2724A Black Lake Boulevard Southwest in Olympia, Washington.
