Description

Beaver Radiator, 1973. These three black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show the exterior of the Beaver Radiator shop and a man working on a piece of equipment. Image 41 shows the exterior of Beaver Radiator. The building appears to be "L" shaped, and the camera is oriented toward the interior corner of the L shape. Along the top edge of the arm of the building at left is "MUFFLERS Unlimited." Along the top edge of the arm at right is "Beaver Radiator." There are two open garage doors in the left-hand arm of the building. In the right-hand arm of the building is one window, one standard door and one garage door. This garage door is partially open. Above this standard door is a sign which reads "EAGER BEAVER SERVICE." Above this garage door is a sign which reads "AIR CONDITIONING." There is a second standard door and a second garage door which are partially visible farther to the right on the right-hand arm of the building. A pickup truck is partially visible parked in front of the left-hand arm of the image. The pickup is oriented toward the left-hand edge of the image, and its front end is outside of the image frame. The rear-right corner of a second pickup truck is visible in the image foreground in the bottom-right corner of the image. Image 42 is nearly identical to image 41. Image 43 shows a portion of the right-hand arm of the building seen in the previous two images. A portion of the rightmost garage door on the left-hand arm of the building is visible at the left-hand edge of this image. The front-left portion of a car is visible near the bottom-right corner of the image. Image 44 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 0 (no physical number on the strip is adjacent to this image frame) is similar to images 43 and 44, but here the photographer has zoomed in or moved closer to the building. The bottom portion of the building in below the bottom edge of the image. The photographer is orienting the camera upward slightly toward the Beaver Radiator sign on the building. Image 1 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 2 is very similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has backed up or zoomed out slightly. Image 3 is nearly identical to image 2. Image 4 shows a man in a jacket or coveralls inserting a long, thin rod into a square piece of equipment (approximately 2' x 2' x 4") which appears to be held together by one clamp on its left side and one on its right. This man is in a workshop, presumably the Beaver Radiator shop. The man is looking toward the camera, and his right hand is held over his head. This hand is holding the rod. Images 5 and 6 are nearly identical to image 4. Image 7 is very similar to the previous three images, but here the man is looking down at the square piece of equipment. Image 8 is virtually identical to image 7. Beaver Radiator was located at 5916 Pacific Avenue Southeast in Olympia, Washington. It appears that it was part of a larger automobile service group called Lacey Auto Center. This group presumably included Mufflers Unlimited (seen in images 41 and 42). (Advertisement, Morning Olympian, 9/24/1972). As of 6/15/2018, the location is occupied by a Meineke Care Care Center.
