Description

Floyd Pugh, C. Don Thompson and Unidentified People, Unknown Dates. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show Floyd Pugh, C. Don Thompson, an unidentified man and an unidentified woman posing for photos. Based on the 1976 MAD Festival pin seen in images 28a through 32a suggests that the images in this group were captured in 1976. Image 20a shows a man with wavy hair, sideburns and a mustache wearing a cardigan over a polo-style shirt. This man's body is turned partially toward the left-hand side of the image, his head is turned slightly toward the left-hand side of the image, and he is looking toward the camera. This man is shown from the waist up. Image 21a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man's head is turned more toward the left-hand side of the image. Images 22a and 23a are nearly identical to image 21a. Image 24a shows a desk or table with several paper documents, a tablet and a coffee cup sitting on top of it. Image 28a shows a man (Floyd Pugh) with hair parted to his right and pushed upward slightly at the forehead. He is wearing a horizontally-striped tie and a suit jacket with a tight zig-zag pattern on it. There is a pinback button on his right jacket lapel which reads "M.A.D. Festival '76." There is a logo made up of a musical note and a musical staff at the center of the button. Mr. Pugh's head and body are turned partially toward the right-hand side of the image. He is looking toward the camera and has a half smile on his face. He is shown from the chest-up. Image 29a is very similar to image 28a, but here he has turned his face slightly more toward the camera. Image 30a is very similar to image 29a, but here Mr. Pugh has a more full smile on his face and his eyes are nearly closed. Images 31a and 32a are nearly identical to image 30a. Image 34a shows a woman with shoulder-length wavy hair wearing a knit sweater over a collared shirt. She is also wearing a necklace with long, oval-shaped beads. Her head and body are oriented directly toward the camera. She is looking toward the camera and smiling. She is shown from the chest up, This image is oriented horizontally. Image 35a is nearly identical to image 34a. Image 36a is very similar to the previous two images, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 37a is nearly identical to images 34a and 35a. Image 38a shows a man (C. Don Thompson) with a receding hairline wearing a diagonally-striped tie and a plaid suit jacket. His head and body are turned toward the left-hand side of the image frame. He is looking toward the camera, but appears to be in mid-blink. He is smiling very slightly. He is shown from the mid-torso up. Image 39a is very similar to the previous image, but here Mr. Thompson's head is turned slightly more toward the camera and his eyes are fully open. Image 40a is very similar to image 39a, but here he is smiling more fully. Image 41a is very similar to the previous image, but here Mr. Thompson is not smiling at all. The images in group "b" show four different men posing for photos. Image 11b shows a young man in a football jersey, shorts and football shoes crouching down slightly and holding his hands out in front of him slightly. The young man's jersey number is 33. This young man is standing in a grassy field. There is a chain-link fence and coniferous trees in the background. Image 12b shows a man wearing a baseball-style cap, a half-turtleneck shirt and a thin chain around his neck. There is a football helmet with a "B" on it embroidered on the man's shirt. The man's head and body are turned partially toward the right-hand side of the image frame, and the man is looking toward the camera. This man is shown from the chest up. He is standing in a grassy field with a chain-link fence and deciduous trees in the background. Image 13b is very similar to the previous image, but here the man's head and body are partially turned toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 14b shows a man with hair parted toward his right, straight-cut bangs and sideburns wearing a polo-style shirt with a thin chain hanging around his neck. This man's head and body are turned partially toward the right-hand side of the image and he is looking toward the camera and smiling. There is a brick wall immediately behind the man. Image 15b is very similar to the previous image, but here the man's head and body are turned partially toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 16b shows a man with curly hair and a beard reading a comic book. The man is wearing glasses, a short-sleeved button-up shirt and slacks. The man is seated. The title of the comic book is All-Star Comics, and the sub-title is Justice Society of America. The man is shown from the knees up. The wall behind the man appears to be plywood. The images in group "c" show a man with hair parted to the right and lifted slightly at the forehead wearing a thin jacket over a collared, button-up shirt posing for photos. Image 17c shows the man with his body turned most of the way toward the right-hand side of the image, and his head turned partially toward the right-hand side of the image frame. He is looking toward the camera and not smiling. He is shown from the chest up. Image 18c is very similar to the previous image, but here the man has turned his head slightly more toward the camera and the man appears to be speaking. Image 19c is very similar to image 17c, but here the man's head and body are turned partially toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 20c is very similar to image 19c, but here the man is smiling. Floyd Pugh and C. Don Thompson were the chief organizers of the first Music, Arts and Dance (MAD) Festival, held in 1973. They were also heavily involved in the MAD Fest of 1976, the year in which these images of the two men appear to have been captured. ("Festival's Come A Long Way," Daily Olympian, 8/26/1976)
