Description

Steel single bit ax head with short wooden handle. This ax was used to split logs or stumps and was referred to as a splitting ax or splitting maul. The ax head is wider at the bit than at the handle (butt) end, roughly in the fashion of a broad ax. The wooden handle is broken at the end that is inserted into the ax head, and the handle slides loosely within the head. Embossed on the side of the head is the letter "D".
