TIN-0015Description
A portion of a tree stump constituting an exhibit, (which might or might not be the original intention) that displays the three main features in the felling of a tree. There is the DIRECTIONAL NOTCH (a triangular shaped wedge cut into the tree on the side that the tree is intended to fall), the FELLING CUT (a horizontal saw cut beginning on the side of the tree opposite the directional notch and extending almost to the notch at the center of the tree), and finally the HINGE (sometimes called the steering hinge, this is the uncut portion of the tree that pulls apart as the tree falls. The hinge guides the tree down to the ground. The fibers at the back of the hinge separate first, and then the fibers at the notch side, resulting in a jagged, upright portion of the tree standing up from the stump at the center. Because of the angle of the directional notch, the object is not a complete circle. http://www.husqvarna.com/us/support/working-with-chainsaws/directional-felling/
Since the hinge does not extend fully from side to side, it is possible that the tree from which this object was taken did not fall straight or into the intended location.Dimensions
