Thurston County Youth Services Center, 1973. These three black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a the exterior of a building, the Thurston County Youth Services Center, under construction. Image 16 shows a single-storey building with slanting roofs, which appears to be largely complete. The grounds surrounding the building are in some disarray, with piles of dirt, various tools and pieces of equipment and bags of concrete visible in the image. There is a piece of equipment on wheels at the center of the image. This piece of equipment appears to be a cement mixer. There are two men standing near the right-hand side of the image frame. Neither man's face is visible in this image. Image 17 shows a similar scene to that of image 16. Here one man (Gary Murphy) is kneeling down and holding a piece of piping, and the second man (Tom Cross) is preparing to drive the piping into the ground with a small sledgehammer. The kneeling man has glasses, and the standing man is wearing a vertically-striped shirt. Image 18 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man with the sledgehammer has raised the sledgehammer in preparation to hit the rebar. Image 19 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved away or zoomed out from the two men working. Image 20 shows what appears to be an entrance to the building under construction. There is lumber and dirt on the ground in this entryway. A wheelbarrow and a coil of metal stripping are visible in the left-hand side of the image. A man in a hardhat is visible in the background on the right-hand side of the image. Image 21 shows the exterior of the Thurston County Youth Services Center, and portion of a second building. A portion of this second building is visible in the left-hand foreground of the image. The ground surrounding the buildings is churned-up, and there is a ditch between the two buildings. A large metal tube is visible in the bottom-right corner of the image. Image 22 again shows the exterior of the youth services center. A man pushing a wheelbarrow is partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. A covered entrance to the building is visible at the right-hand side of the building. Image 23 shows the youth services center from a distance. A second building, or perhaps a wing of the youth services center, is occupying a portion of the right-hand foreground of the image. Image 24 shows the youth services center from a distance. The branches and leaves of a maple tree are in the foreground of the image. Image 25 again shows the youth services center from a distance. In the foreground are the branches and leaves of what appears to be an alder tree, as well as some bushes along the bottom of the image. Image 26 shows the center from a distance. Two pickup trucks are parked next to each other to the left of the center of the image. A third pickup truck is partially visible behind a portion of the left-hand side of the image. Stacks of metal piping and other building materials are visible near the left-hand edge of the image. A forklift is visible near the right-hand side of the image. Image 27 is nearly identical to image 26. Image 28 is similar to the previous two images, but here a pickup truck with a camper in the bed and a car are visible parked on the road in the image foreground. Image 29 shows the exterior of the center. Partially visible at the bottom of the image is the pickup truck with the camper in the bed. Image 30 shows the exterior of the center. In the image foreground is a portion of the cement mixer seen in image 16. Image 31 shows a sign for the youth services center alongside a tree-lined road.
These images were captured for inclusion with an article concerning the construction of the Thurston County Youth Services Center. The center was planned to function as a juvenile court, a juvenile detention center and other uses. ("County Youth center progress continues," Lacey Leader, 5/30/1973)Made/Created
