Description

Fire and Wreckage, 1978. These eight black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so one of the physical numbers on the strips is duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show an active fire amongst several structures and vehicles. Image 9a shows the fire burning in a brushy field. The rear side portion of a pickup truck is visible in the lower-right corner of the image. A log sitting on top of a shorter perpendicular log is visible along the bottom of the image on the left-hand side. Image 10a shows a broken window laying on the ground, which presumably has fallen out of the window opening visible in the upper half of the image. Image 11a shows smoke rising into the air in the distance. A home and a second building are partially visible at the left-hand side of the image, and a pickup truck is partially visible at the center of the image. The fire appears to be over a small rise in the ground between the camera and the fire. Image 12a shows a smoke-filled scene. A building and a pickup truck are partially visible. This image was captured through an opening in some coniferous trees. Image 13a is very similar to the previous image, but here there are no trees in the foreground. Image 14a shows lots of smoke rising out of a brushy/lightly-forested area. It appears that the streak from a fire hose is crossing the image near its center. Image 15a shows a scene on fire. A building is partially visible through the smoke at the center of the image. Power lines are partially visible through the smoke at the right-hand side of the image. Image 16a shows a building on fire. The building is partially obscured by trees and other brush. Image 17a is nearly identical to image 16a. Image 18a a shows a tree trunk with flames along one side. Image 19a shows smoke pouring out of the top of a corrugated metal building. The building occupies the left-hand side of the image, and trees occupy the right-hand side. Image 20a shows trees and brush in flames. Image 21a shows two firemen operating a fire hose while two other firemen and one plainclothes man stand nearby. The hose's stream is directed toward a smoke-shrouded building at the right-hand side of the image frame. Two semi trailers are visible on the left-hand side of the image. A car is partially visible at the bottom of the image in the foreground. Image 22a shows a large building with a smaller connected building and a van parked next to the smaller building in flames. The fire appears to be most active in the smaller of the two buildings. Image 23a shows four firemen directing a fire hose. The hose's stream is firing at a building partially visible on the far right-hand side of the image. A propane tank is visible below the stream of the fire hose. Two hoses are winding along the ground in the image foreground. Image 24a shows the stream of a fire hose crossing the center of the image diagonally. The stream is directed toward a burning building which is almost entirely obscured by smoke. A propane tank s partially visible at the right-hand side of the image. Image 25a shows one fireman striding away from the camera near the left-hand side of the image. A second fireman is standing to the right of the center of the image and looking over at the other fireman. The back end of a fire engine is partially visible at the right-hand side of the image frame. Two parked semi trailers are visible in the left-hand side of the background. An arch-roofed building is visible in the center of the image background. Image 26a shows a burning delivery truck next to a burning building. The front portion of a fire engine is visible along the left-hand edge of the image frame. Two semi trailers are visible in the right-hand side of the image background. Image 27a shows two firemen directing a firehose stream toward what appears to be a very long propane tank and a parked truck. A third fireman is approaching the other two firemen from behind. All of the firemen are facing away from the camera. Image 28a is very similar to image 27a, but here the photographer has zoomed out or moved away from the firemen. The third firemen has joined the two operating the firehose. Image 29a shows two firemen directing a firehose toward a truck while a third fireman and a plainclothes man stand nearby. The arch-roofed building is visible to the near the center of the background. Image 30a is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their right by approximately fifteen feet. The truck toward which the firemen were directing the fire hose in the previous image is much more visible here. The images in group "b" show the aftermath of the fire seen in group "a." Image 30b shows Several burned-out trucks and other fire-damaged vehicles which appear to be grouped closely together. Image 31b shows a large burned-out building and a burned-out van. There is a barricade in front of the large garage-door opening in the burned building. Image 32b shows two fire-damaged pickup trucks, one fire-damaged bus or delivery truck, and propane tanks with various levels of fire damage. Image 33b shows a large pile of building debris on the ground. Much of this debris is corrugated metal siding. An arch-roofed building is partially visible near the upper-right corner of the image. A truck with a propane tank on the back is visible near the center of the image. Image 34b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed in toward the truck with the propane tank on the back. Image 35b is very similar to image 30b, but here the photographer has zoomed out one the scene to encompass a wider area. Image 36b shows several very badly burned semi trailers. In the background is a very long propane tank. Image 37b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned to their left. The burned-out semi trailers are still visible, but here two burned-out trucks and a building are partially visible at the left-hand side of the image. Image 38b shows two burned-out pickup trucks, a burned-out semi trailer or bus and an arch-roofed building. Image 39b shows a large, crushed metal body or some vehicle or vessel next to the arch-roofed building. Image 40b shows burned out vehicles in the background and propane tanks in the foreground. Image 41b shows burned out semi trailers at the left and burned out trucks to the right. A long propane tank is visible in the far background. Image 42b shows a large burned building, a burned van and a burned delivery trucks. There are also barricades spread through the image.
