Description

Elementary School, 1978. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show children and adults in and around a school. The physical numbers on the first strip (images 4-8) are either blocked out completely by discolorations along the edge of the strip, or very difficult to make out. Image 4 is cut off and very blurred. Image 5 is also very blurred, but appears to show a window or a door with a window in it. Image 6 shows a woman standing with three children. The woman and children are all facing toward the left-hand side of the image. Two of the children are nearer to the camera than the woman, and one child is mostly obscured behind the woman. A fourth child is partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. This woman and children appear to be in an office or a hallway. Image 7 shows a person wearing glasses and a jacket standing at a desk or counter and facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. This person is shown from the mid-torso up. Several other adults are visible in the background on either side of the desk or counter. Image 8 shows many children walking down a hallway away from the camera. A man in a suit and tie is visible in the background facing toward the camera. Image 9 shows a classroom with many evenly-spaced desks in it. No people are visible in this image. Image 10 is similar to the previous image, but here in the foreground is a woman wearing glasses and a plaid suit bending forward slightly to talk to a child. The child is wearing a stocking cap and jacket and is facing away from the camera. Image 11 shows six children and two adult men walking down a hallway away from the camera. One of the children is much closer to the camera than any of the other people in this image. Image 12 shows a little boy wearing a letterman's-style jacket sitting in a chair and holding a box or perhaps a thick book. This boy is looking toward his right. A second person's hand is visible near the bottom-left corner of the image. A CHIPs lunchbox is visible on a small table between these two people. Image 13 shows three women and two children walking down a sidewalk toward the camera. A nearly full parking lot is visible to the left of the sidewalk and in the background. A small portion of the roof of a building is visible in the upper-right corner of this image. Image 14 shows two women and five children walking down a sidewalk toward the camera. Here the parked cars are to the right of the sidewalk. A house, a car and two recreational vehicles are visible in the background. Image 15 shows a woman and a child seated at a desk. The woman is holding a pen or pencil and is looking down at a paper document. A large discoloration covers much of the right-hand half of the image. The child is mostly obscured by this discoloration. Image 16 appears to show someone seated in a classroom, but most of the image is covered by a large discoloration, so it is difficult to make out. Image 17 shows a child seated at a desk with their hands covering their face. This child is wearing a zip-up, hooded sweatshirt. There is a cup full of pencils on the desk in front of the child. Image 18 shows a woman seated at a table with her arm around the waist of a little girl standing next to her. The woman is on the left, and the little girl is on the right. The girl is wearing a large nametag which reads "Anne Jones." There is a purse and what appears to be a lunch box on the table. Printed at intervals along one long edge of all of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
