Description

People, Some Unidentified, 1976. These thirteen black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show an adult woman and children in a classroom, a man and a woman seated at a table in a classroom, and a man with a graduation cake. Image 17a shows a woman (Betty Stoker) with long hair and glasses looking at the camera. She is very close to the camera, and only her face and shoulders are visible in this image. This image is blurry. Image 18a shows an adult woman seated at a table in an elementary school classroom. This woman appears to be the teacher in this classroom. She is looking downward and maybe writing. There is one child seated at the same table as the woman, and only the back of this child's head is visible at the center bottom of the image. Several other children are visible in the background. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 19a is very similar to image 18a, but here the woman is reaching for something on the table with her right hand. Image 20a is very similar to the previous two images, but here the image is oriented vertically. Here the child seated at the table with the woman is visible from the waist up. This child is facing away from the camera. The woman is looking toward the child. Image 21a is similar to the previous image, but here the woman is looking downward and the child is turned partially toward the camera. The child is resting their chin on their right hand. Image 22a shows the woman seated at the table and writing. The photographer has moved to their right a few feet to line up more directly with the woman. The woman is looking down and writing. Only a small portion of the face and the left shoulder of the child seated at the table are visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 23a shows the woman opening a folder and looking toward the left-hand side of the image frame. The photographer has again moved to their right by several feet. Image 24a shows a man (Jim Ainey) and a woman (Marianne Foley) seated at a table in what appears to be a school classroom. The man is at the left, is bearded, and is wearing a denim jacket. The woman at the right has her hair curled away from her face and is wearing a blazer. Both the man and the woman have a copy of the same book in front of them. It appears to be a textbook. The man is looking over at the woman, and the woman is looking down toward the book in front of her. Image 25a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking down at the book and the woman is looking over at the man. Image 26 shows the man and woman looking at each other. Image 27a shows the man and woman both looking down at the books. Image 28a is very similar to image 27a, but here the photographer has zoomed in slightly or moved closer to the man and woman. Image 29a is nearly identical to image 28a. Image 30a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man and woman are looking at each other. There is a paper document on the table to the right of the cake. At the top of the page it reads "Mountain View Elementary" and it also appears to read "Michael Brennan." The images in group "b" show a sign which reads "IT'S A GIRL! DETAILS INSIDE!" in a front window of the Lacey Leader newspaper offices and several women inside the Lacey Leader offices. Image 8b shows the sign in the window. The photographer appears to be approximately five feet away from the sign. Image 9b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 10b is very similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has moved back from the sign by approximately ten feet. Image 11b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved back from the sign by an additional 6-10 feet. Image 12b is nearly identical to images 8b and 9b. Image 13b shows the sign from a more front-on perspective than the previous images. Image 14b is nearly identical to image 13b. She is wearing a plaid shirt and facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. A door which resembles a window shutter is partially visible at the left-hand side of the image. Image 24b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has stepped farther into the doorway revealing a second woman to the left of the woman described previously. This woman has straight, collar bone-length hair with long bangs. She is wearing glasses and a sweater. She is looking toward the camera. The woman seen in the previous image is visible in the bottom-right corner of the image. Image 25b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed in more on the woman with bangs. Image 26b shows a more zoomed-in shot of the woman with the ponytail. She is looking downward and the image is blurry. The images in group "c" show children viewing a quilt, children working with paper mache, people performing a scene in a play, a table with various items on it, children with homemade and other simple musical instruments, and a man posing for photos.
