Description

Metal and wood balance scale for weighing and classifying eggs. A flat piece of wood has a balance assembly nailed to it. The nails (brads) have been clinched on the bottom of the wood piece. The assembly appears to be brass and consists of a beam pivoted on a brass support with a second support at the end of the beam. The beam is made up of a strip of brass that is bent in a U-shape with one end riveted together and the other end forming a loop. Within the loop is a brass cup that swings on pivot pins and is shaped to hold an egg. On the closed end of the beam is a hanging weight that can be moved to any of four notches on the beam. Numbers are stamped under the notches "19" "22" "24" and "26". A paper had been fastened (glued?) to the wood but is mostly gone. A few letters in red ink remain on the paper: "GTON" and "? on". Used on the Yates Egg Farm.
