Description

Richard's Roundhouse, 1973. These seven black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate rolls of film, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show the Richard's Roundhouse restaurant under construction. The building frame appears mostly complete, and the outer brick wall is partially finished. Two partial train cars are parked within the building's frame. Image 7a shows the entirety of the building. Stacks of bricks and other building materials are visible near the lower-right corner of this image. The back side of the drive-in movie theater's screen is visible near the top-right corner of the image. Three to four people are visible standing within the frame of the building on the right-hand side. Image 8a shows a much closer-up view of the building. One of the partial train cars is visible extending from near the center of the image to the lower-left corner of the image. The top of the drive-in movie theater screen is visible in the upper-left quadrant of the image. Four people are visible near the partial train car which is farther away from the camera. Image 9a is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed out from the building. A portion of the partially finished brick wall is visible along the wall nearest to the camera. A chain-link fence with slats inserted into it vertically is visible crossing the image diagonally in the bottom-left corner of the image. Image 10a shows a more close-up view of the framing roof members of the building. This image looks downward into the building. Six parked vehicles are visible along the top edge of the image. Image 11a shows another image of the roof framing members. This image also looks downward into the building. Image 12a shows one of the train cars inside the building frame. This image was captured from within the building. This image looks directly at one of the ends of the train car. Image 13a shows the roofing members of the building, but here the image looks from inside the building up through the framing members. Two ladders are visible near the center of the image. An end of one of the train cars is visible near the lower-left corner of the image. Image 14a is similar to the previous image, but here one of the train cars occupies most of the left-hand side of the image. The other train car is visible in the lower-right corner of the image. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 15a is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. A cinder block is visible at the bottom-center of the image. Image 16a shows is nearly identical to image 14a. Image 17a shows the entirety of the framed building, and the image was captured from ground level. Pallets of building materials are visible near the walls of the building at the left- and right-hand sides of the image. Image 18a is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their left by approximately 15 feet. Image 19a is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed in on the building. Here the pallets of building materials are partially visible near both bottom corners of the image. The building itself is only partially visible in this image. The images in group "b" shows the interior of the Richard's Roundhouse restaurant once construction was complete and the restaurant was fully set up. Image 44b shows the interior of one of the rooms of the restaurant. Four windows with a curved upper edge are visible in the far wall of the room shown. A flight of three stairs is visible occupying the lower-left corner of the image. Two dining tables are visible at the center of the image. Two men are partially visible seated at a table in front of the window second from the left. A third man is partially visible standing at the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 1b is nearly identical to image 44b. Image 2b is very similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has moved to their right by approximately four feet. Images 3b and 4b are nearly identical to image 2b. Image 5b shows the same room of the restaurant, but from a different angle. Here the photographer has moved to the wall which was to their right in the previous images. At the far side of the image is one of the long sides of one of the train cars embedded in the restaurant. Along the top of the car is text which reads "THE PRESIDENTIAL CAR." There are many dining tables in the space between the camera and the train car. Image 6b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 7b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved approximately ten feet closer to the train car. Image 8b is nearly identical to image 7b. Image 9b shows a section of the restaurant which is sunken into the floor in relation to the surrounding floor. This image is blurry. There is what appears to be grilling station in this sunken section of the floor. Image 10b shows the same scene as in the previous image, but here the image is not blurry. A vent hood is visible above the grilling station. A table and two chairs are partially visible near the bottom-left corner of the image. Image 11b is nearly identical to image 44b, but here the image is blurred. Image 12b shows a portion of the restaurant. This image looks down into part of the restaurant from a slightly elevated portion of the restaurant. A wooden railing along the edge of this elevated section crosses the image near the bottom. The lower section of the restaurant is blurry in this image. Image 13b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 14b shows five people seated at a small group of tables in a room of the restaurant. There is a half-oval shaped opening the wall to the right of the center of the image. There appears to be a band with horns playing inside of this opening. This image is blurry. Image 15b is very similar to image 11b, but image 15b is even more blurry. Image 16b shows the sunken grilling station at the restaurant. Two tables occupy the lower-left quadrant of the image. Image 17b shows a portion of the restaurant. A table with four chairs is visible in the lower right-hand corner of the image, along with one other partially visible chair. At the center of the left-hand edge of the image is a person in a chef's hat pushing a cart. Image 18b shows a section of the restaurant with people dining in it. This image was captured from a slightly elevated portion of the restaurant. This image is blurry. Image 19b is nearly identical to image 18b.
