People, Some Unidentified, 1976. These eleven black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show a Lacey fireman, a man reading, a woman buying candy from two Girl Scouts, a Lacey City Council meeting, and two people working with documents and electronic workstations while a man watches and/or supervises. These latter people may be engaged in putting documents on microfilm or microfiche. Image 26a shows a man with a mustache standing and looking to his left and downward toward the camera. This man is wearing a Lacey Fire Department uniform. He i shown from the waist up. An open doorway is visible in the lower-left corner of the image. Image 27a shows a man with straight, medium-length hair seated on a couch and reading. His head and body are oriented toward the right-hand side of the image. A bookshelf visible beyond the man holds books, a can of spray paint, a record turntable and various other items. Image 37a shows a woman (Dorothy Gregory) exchanging cash for a box of candy with two Girl Scouts (Marci Bernard at left, Cindy Ross at right). The Girl Scouts are on the left and the woman is on the right. This woman has short, curly hair and is wearing a pants suit with a brooch below her left collar. The two girls are wearing baseball-style caps and Girl Scout uniforms. This scene took place at Mountain View Elementary School. All three of these people are shown from the knees up. This image is oriented vertically. Image 38a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 39a is very similar to image 38a, but here the images is oriented vertical. Images 40a through 42a are nearly identical to image 39a. Image 43a is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 44a shows the same scene as the previous two images, but here the photographer has moved closer to his subjects. The girls are shown from the mid-torso up and the woman is shown from the waist up. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 1a shows three people in a room. The person closest to the camera is a woman with glasses and short hair. She is looking toward the camera, and she is quite blurry. She is in the lower-left corner of the image. The person second closest to the camera is a man (Del Chase) with combed-back hair. He is looking toward the camera, and he is also blurry. The farthest person from the camera is a balding man (Dick Johnson) with glasses. He is facing toward the right-hand side of the image. These three people are shown from the mid-chest up. They are in a room with wood-paneled walls. Image 2a shows four people seated at two metal folding tables set end-to-end. One additional man is seated at a different table in the left-hand background of the image. Another additional man is partially visible seated in the right-hand foreground of the image. Of the four people seated at the end-to-end table, the one nearest to the camera is a woman (Jo Gauthier) with short, wavy hair and glasses wearing a sleeveless sweater over a patterned shirt. Second closest to the camera is a man (Bob Carino) with glasses wearing a plaid blazer. Third closest to the camera is Dick Johnson. The farthest of the four from the camera is a man with glasses wearing a suit jacket. These four people are all facing toward the left-hand side of the image. This man's body is oriented toward the left-hand side of the image frame. His arms are crossed and he appears to be seated. He is shown from the mid-torso up. To the right of this man, and nearer to the camera, is a man who looks very similar to the one just described. This man is shown from the collar-bone up. He is looking downward. A third man, further from the camera than the first two is seated and looking away from the camera. He short, straight hair. Images 4a through 7a are very similar to image 2a, with only minor changes in the people's positions and postures. Image 9a shows a man with long, slightly wavy hair and a mustache leaning forward slightly and reaching out to touch an electronic workstation of some kind. His head and body are oriented toward the camera, and he is looking downward. Seated at this workstation is a woman with medium-length, slightly wavy hair and glasses. She is looking toward the piece of equipment. This woman's body is obscured from view by a cardboard box with "WASHINGTON STATE ARCHIVES" printed on one side. A second man is partially visible bending forward near the left-hand edge of the image. His face and most of his body are obscured by a part of a second electronic workstation. Image 10a is nearly identical to image 9a. Image 11a shows a man in a plaid shirt seated at a folding table. He is facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame, and is shown in profile. There is a stack of documents and an open cardboard box on the table in front of him. The man is looking downward slightly. Image 12a shows a top-down view of a woman seated at a table and placing a paper document on a pile of other paper documents. This woman has loosely curly hair and is wearing glasses. She is facing toward the bottom of the image frame. The stack of documents which she is adding to is to her left. A rectangular metal rod which strings or wire hanging from is crosses the image nearly vertically through the image foreground. Image 13a is similar to the previous image, but here the woman is adjusting two images on the table in front of her. Image 14a is similar to the previous two images, but here man with long hair and a mustache seen in images 9a and 10a is standing behind the woman and has his right hand on the back of her chair. Image 15a is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman has two documents in front of her, and she is touching the one on her right. Image 16a is very similar to the previous two images, but here the woman is touching both of the documents in front of her. Image 17a shows a top-down view of the scene seen in images 9a and 10a. The man with long hair and a mustache is standing and is pointing to the electronic workstation to his right, at which a seated man is working. The woman working on the other station is visible in the left-hand side of the image. Image 18a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man with the mustache is no longer pointing. Image 19a is very similar to the previous two images, but here the man with the mustache is ending forward. Image 20a is very similar to images 9a and 10a. The man with the mustache is facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 21a is very similar to image 20a, but here the photographer has moved to their right by approximately two feet. Images 22a and 23a are nearly identical to image 21a.
The images in group "b" show a sign which reads "BICENTENNIAL COMMUNITY," and a small grocery or convenience store next to a house. Image 5b shows a sign which reads "BICENTENNIAL COMMUNITY," "1776" and "1976." At the center of the sign is an illustration of the state of Washington overlaid with a stars and stripes design. This sign is on a pole which extends past the bottom edge of the image frame. Trees and several power and/or telephone poles are visible in the background. Images 6b through 9b are nearly identical. Image 10b shows a small grocery or convenience store next to a house. The store is on the corner of Carpenter Road and Mullen Road, as seen on the street sign on the corner of the sidewalk. This image appears to have been captured from the opposite sidewalk corner. On the left-facing wall of the store building is "INTERLAKE GROCERY." A Texaco sign is next to the street sign. There are two gas pumps in front of the store. The house is to the right of the store. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 11b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved closer to the store. Image 12b is very similar to image 11b, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 13b is very similar to image 10b, but the photographer has moved to their right slightly and panned toward their left. Image 14b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved approximately 20 feet toward their right and nearer to the store.
The images in group "c" show what appears to be a table centerpiece and a woman appearing to offer event tickets to a man. Image 5c shows a candle set in the center of many very small flowers. This centerpiece is on a table. The centerpiece and table occupy the lower-right half of the image. Image 6c shows a woman (Beverly Hilts) offering event tickets to a man (Al Striggow). The woman is on the left-hand side of the image. She has short, wavy hair and glasses and is wearing a jacket with "NORTH THURSTON BOOSTERS" printed on the left breast. She is holding the tickets in her left hand, and they are splayed out like playing cards. She is holding her hand with the tickets very close to her left shoulder. The man is on the right, he has combed-back hair, and he is wearing a jacket identical to the one worn by the woman. The man is reaching out and grasping one of the tickets. Both people are shown from the waist up. Images 7c and 8c are nearly identical to image 6c. Image 9c is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed in on the two people slightly. Here they are shown from the mid-torso up. Images 10c through 12c are nearly identical to images 6c through 8c.
Printed in alternation along one long edge of each of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
