Description

Unidentified People, 1978. These fifteen black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using seven separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show interior shots of a grocery store, and a man and a woman standing outside of a real estate office. Image 20a shows many people standing in line at a series of checkout counters at a grocery store. This image looks at the scene perpendicular to the checkout lines. Image 21a is nearly identical to image 20a. Image 22a also shows people in the checkout line, but here the image is looking parallel to one of the checkout lines. Two little girls in matching dresses are holding balloons in the image foreground. The little girl on the right is jumping. Image 23a is nearly identical to image 22a. Image 24a is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their left by several feet. Image 25a is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their right by several feet. Here two little boys are visible riding in a shopping cart. One is riding in the top, one in the bottom. Image 26a is effectively blank. Image 27a shows the two little girls in matching dresses standing in the store and facing away from the camera. They are facing toward a person in a Twinkie suit. Images 28a and 29a are very similar to image 27a, but the person in the Twinkie suit is moving progressively closer to the two little girls. Image 35a shows a man and woman standing under a sign on top of a pole. The sign is for American Realty and has an illustration of an eagle on it. The woman is on the left and has long, curly hair and is wearing a trench coat. The man is on the right and he is wearing a blazer over a horizontally-striped shirt. There is a brick house in the background with an open sign in the window. Image 36a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 37a is very similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has move closer to the two people. Images 38a and 40a are nearly identical to image 37a. The images in group "b" show one man presenting another man an award plaque, a boy and girl seated on a floor amongst a pile of empty beverage containers and other items, and a man and a woman exchanging a document while a second woman stands in-between them. Image 18b shows two men in vests and ties facing each other in front of a concrete block wall. The man on the right is wearing an IGA nametag which shows his name as "Tom." The man on the right is also holding up a plaque which reads "Special Award" and "IGA," among other things. The man on the right is looking down at the plaque and the other man is looking off toward the left-hand side of the image frame. The men are shown from the waist up. Image 19b is very similar to the previous image, but here the man on the left is looking toward the plaque. Images 20b through 22b are nearly identical to image 19b. Image 23b is very similar to the previous images, but here both men are looking toward the camera. Image 34b shows one boy and one girl sitting on a floor amongst a pile of bottles, cans, lunch trays and other items. These images were likely captured in the Lacey Leader offices. Images 35b through 38b are nearly identical to image 34b. Image 39b shows a man and a woman exchanging documents. These images were also likely captured in the Lacey Leader offices. The woman is on the left, and the man is on the right. There is a second woman between the man and other woman. The woman at left is wearing a sweater over a turtleneck sweater. The man has glasses and is wearing a suit. The woman at the center is wearing a zippered sweater over a dress, which is in turn worn over a turtleneck sweater. Images 40b through 44b are nearly identical to image 39b. The images in group "c" show a woman in a back yard, a wall with a calendar on it, a man posing for a photo, and two dogs in the bed of a truck. Image 2c shows an older woman in glasses and a long, plaid dress with buttons on the front standing in a yard next to some flowers and a chainlink fence. The woman is on the left-hand side of the image, and her head and body are turned partially toward the right-hand side of the image. This image is oriented vertically. Image 3c is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Image 4c shows the woman reaching down near the ground. Image 5c is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 6c shows a wall with a calendar hanging on it. The image is too blurry to make out the year or month shown on the calendar. Image 10c shows a slightly balding man in glasses and a collared shirt posing for a photo. He is facing directly toward the camera and smiling. He is shown from the mid-torso down. A trophy on a shelf is visible in the upper-right corner of the image. Image 10c is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 11c shows two dogs in the bed of a truck. The dogs both have their front legs up on the side of the truck bed. Both dogs are facing toward the camera. This truck appears to be parked in front of the Lacey Leader offices. Image 12c is very similar to the previous image, but here the dog on the left is yawning. Image 13c is very similar to the previous two images, but here the dog on the left is looking downward and the dog on the right is looking off toward the right-hand side of the image frame. The images in group "d" show a woman with short, wavy hair wearing a short-sleeved top and a pendant necklace looking at an HVAC system and standing outside of a house. Image 9d shows the woman looking at what appears to be an HVAC system or similar utility box attached to the side of a building. The woman is shown from the mid-chest up and is occupying the lower-right quadrant of the image. The HVAC system occupies the left-hand side of the image frame. Images 10c and 11d are nearly identical to image 9c. Image 12d shows the woman standing outside of the front side of a home. The woman is in the left-hand side of the image. A parked pickup truck with a canopy is partially visible behind the woman. Images 13d through 15d are nearly identical to image 12d. Image 16d is similar to the previous four images, but here the woman has moved to the right slightly. Image 17d is nearly identical to image 16d. The images in group "e" show two older women looking at antiques and one of the two women posing with an antique camera. Image 26e shows the two women seated at a room with several pieces of art hanging on the walls. The woman closer to the camera is seated next to a trunk with an antique camera, a goblet and two other items on top. This woman is holding and examining a box. The woman farther from the camera is seated at a table with what appears to be a briefcase on top. Images 27e and 28e are nearly identical to image 26e. Image 29e is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman closer to the camera is reaching toward one of the unknown items on the trunk. Image 30e shows the woman who was nearer to the camera in the previous four images holding an antique camera. Her body is oriented toward the photographer, and she is looking down at the camera. Images 31e and 32e are nearly identical to image 30e. The images in group "f" shows a house. Image 7f shows a house with a single-storey section on the left-hand side and a two-storey section on the right. There is a chimney attached on the left-hand end of the house. There is an elevated deck on the right-hand end of the house. This image appears to show the back side of the house. Image 8f is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 9f shows the same house, but here shows the front of the house and the side of the house with the chimney attached. Image 10f is nearly identical to the previous image. The images in group "g" show three men wearing vests with many buttons and badges attached. These images were likely captured in the Lacey Leader offices. These men are members of the Lions Club. The man on the left is John Mangham (see nametag on his vest), and he is attaching a new button to the vest of the man at center. The man at center's nametag is not readable. A third man, also in a vest, is standing at the right. He is facing directly toward the camera. This man is Everett Riser (see nametag). All of the images on this strip (3g through 6g) are nearly identical. The images in group "h" shows three women congregating around a dining room table. Image 18h shows the three women around a dining room table. The woman on the left and the woman at center are seated, and the woman on the right is standing. The woman at the left has very curly hair and is wearing a t-shirt. She is holding a small book in her right hand. Both of her arms are resting on the table. She is looking toward the camera and smiling. The woman at center has slightly wavy short hair and is wearing glasses and a v-neck, sleeveless top. She is looking at a spiral-bound book which reads "culinary classics" on the front. The woman on the right has shoulder-length hair and is wearing a floral-print shirt and a skirt. This woman and the woman at center are looking at the "culinary classics" book. There is a framed painting of a bouquet of flowers on the wall in the background. Image 19h is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman on the left is looking toward the other two women. Image 20h is nearly identical to image 18h. Image 21h is nearly identical to image 19h. Image 22h is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their right slightly.
