South Sound Crazy Days, 1974. These five black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show mall employees and customers engaged in various activities at the South Sound Crazy Days event held at South Sound Center. Image 5 shows a man in a boater hat and polo shirt holding money or tickets in his right hand. The man's head and body are turned slightly toward the left. He is looking toward the camera. There appears to be a small bowl in front of the man. Image 6 shows a man with a mustache and sideburns wearing a wicker sombrero, scarf and a vest. The vest has a star badge and an American flag patch on it. He is holding what appears to be feathers in his hands. The man's head and body are turned partially toward the left-hand side of the image and he is smiling. He appears to be in a commercial kitchen. Image 7 shows a sign which reads "TEA & COFFEE" hanging above a large doorway with a garage-style door which is not opened all the way. There are several baskets hanging near the sign. Image 25 shows a very blurry shot of what appears to be stacked boxes and merchandise in a store. Image 26 shows a girl cutting a block of cheese with a large knife. The girl has long, straight hair parted at the center and she is wearing a pair of pinstriped overalls over a t-shirt. She is at a table, and is facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. This girl is likely in the Hickory Farms store location at South Sound Center. Image 27 is similar to the previous image, but here the girl's head and body are oriented toward the camera. Here she appears to be cutting a summer sausage. Image 28 shows a small child wearing a t-shirt and shorts reaching into a basket of candy and looking over their right shoulder toward the camera and smiling. There are four total baskets of candy on top of a wooden barrel. There is a cartoon elephant on a sign above the candy. The two visible signs for the candy read "DAQUIRI CANDY" and "WHISKEY SOUR CANDY." Image 29 shows a woman (Jo Gauthier) holding a large summer sausage out in front of her and preparing to slice it with a very large kitchen knife. She has glasses on and is wearing coveralls with many pinback buttons attached to the chest area. Her head and body are turned partially toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 30 is nearly identical to image 29. Image 35 shows many people in a hallway of SouthSound Center. On the left-hand side of the image are rolling racks of clothing and people browsing this clothing. On the right-hand side of the image are many people walking away from the camera. Several stores are visible along the left-hand side of the image. The nearest of these to the camera reads "LERNER SHOPS." The second furthest from the camera reads "LEED'S QualiCraft Shoes." Image 36 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved amongst the rolling racks of clothing. Image 37 shows many people browsing merchadise in the mall hallway outside of the Sears location at South Sound Center. Image 38 shows two women standing outside of the entrance to the Hallmark store location at South Sound Center. To the left of the Hallmark sign is a partially-visible sign which reads "LEWS," and to the right of the hallmark sign is a partially-visible sign which reads "SHO." Image 39 shows many women, men and children browsing clothing stacked on tables in the Woolworth's location in South Sound Center. Image 40 shows a fairly blurry, close-up shot of several stuffed animals. Image 41 shows a lion stuffed animal, or a person wearing a cartoon lion costume. Image 42 shows baskets and glasses bottles sitting on top of two barrels. Image 43 is very similar to the previous image, but is less blurry. Image 44 shows people in a hallway of South Sound Center. A rolling rack of clothing is just tot he right of the center of the image. Visible business signs include Vista Optical, Maggie's and Park Lane.Made/Created
