Description

Sidewalk Craft Show, 1973. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a sidewalk craft show. Image 3 shows one woman playing a mountain dulcimer and one woman and one man watching the first woman play. The woman playing mountain dulcimer is at the left-hand side of the image, and she is seated. She has long hair and a scarf tied over the top of her head. Her head and body are oriented directly toward the right-hand side of the image frame. The man watching her play is standing at the right-hand side of the image. He has shoulder length hair, a beard and glasses and is wearing a jumpsuit. The woman watching is standing just to the left of the man. She has long hair and is wearing a very long button-up shirt. There is a low table between the woman playing the dulcimer and the two people watching. There is a second mountain dulcimer on this table, along with several ceramic jars and/or vases. This scene appears to have been captured outside of Childhood's End Gallery, located at the corner of 4th Avenue and Water Street in Olympia, Washington (refer to partial sign visible above the standing woman's head). This image is oriented horizontally. Image 4 shows only the woman playing mountain dulcimer. She is in the same position as in the previous image. This image is oriented vertically. Image 5 shows the woman playing mountain dulcimer from the perspective of the man seen in image 3. The woman not playing mountain dulcimer is visible near the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 6 shows an older woman walking past a young man and young woman seated together on a chair. The older woman is on the left-hand side of the image and is wearing a head scarf and a long coat. She is carrying a purse and several books or documents in her left arm. She is facing toward the right-hand side of the image. The young man and young woman are on the right-hand side of the image. There is a rug spread out on the ground next to the young man and young woman in the chair. There are several boxes, a cooler and several other items on the rug. This scene is taking place on a sidewalk outside of a store. In the front window of the store are mannequins wearing swimsuits and other summer wear. A second young woman is sitting in a chair on the sidewalk beyond the young man and young woman. This second young woman is looking toward the camera. Image 7 is similar to the previous image, but here the older woman is not present. A young person with a ponytail is facing away from the camera near the left-hand edge of the image. The photographer has also moved to their right by several feet to get a view which looks farther down the sidewalk. This image was captured on Legion Way in Olympia, Washington. A street sign showing Legion Way is visible near the left-hand side of the image. Image 8 shows the same scene as the previous two images, but here the photographer has moved nearer to the young woman sitting by herself. The previously-seated young man and young woman are crouched down amongst the items spread out on the rug. Image 9 is similar to image 8, but here the young man is standing and facing toward the camera. Images 10 and 11 shows people milling about in the same scene seen in images 8 and 9. Image 12 shows a man in a fedora walking past a shop with a table set up outside of it. Image 13 shows two men walking past a shop with a table set up outside of it.
