Description

Jewelry and Corsage Makers, 1976. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show two women sitting together at a table and making jewelry, and three different women sitting around a table and making corsages. Image 38 shows two older women seated at a small, square table and working on jewlery. Behind the women are several fairly large buffing or grinding wheels in groups of two on a work bench along a wall. The presence of that number of grinding wheels suggests that these images were captured in a jewelry classroom or potentially a large-scale jewelry production workshop. One of the women is seated on the right-hand side of the table, and she has wavy hair worn up. She is wearing glasses and a patterned button-up shirt. She is facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame, and she is holding a long, thin object in her right hand. The other woman is seated opposite the camera, and her body is oriented toward the camera. She is looking downward, and she is wearing a jeweler's headband magnifier. There is a cloth on the table with many small beads or stones laying on top of it. Image 28 shows the same scene as the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their left and closer to the two women. Images 40 through 42 are nearly identical to image 39. Image 43 shows three older women seated around a dining table in what appears to be a residence. The woman at left has wavy hair and is wearing glasses and a jacket. The woman at center has a Beatles-type haircut and is wearing a jacket. The woman at right has curly hair and is wearing a cardigan and a very long beaded necklace. There are several corsages on the table in front of the women, and they appear to be working on these corsages. The woman at right is wearing a corsage on her right wrist. Image 44 is nearly identical to the previous image.
