Description

Log Carvers, 1978. These four black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show people using chainsaws to carve logs into animal and human figures. Image 20 shows a wood carving of a dog holding something in its mouth. There are several other smaller carvings on the ground beyond the dog carving. Two people are visible in the background working on wood carvings with chainsaws. A man standing with a cane is visible in the background near the left-hand edge of the image. This image appears to have been captured in a gravel lot. There is a convenience store in the background. The sign for the store shows that its name is D&M Fine Foods. Several cars and a pickup truck are parked next to the store. Image 21 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 22 shows a wood carving of a ram. Several other carvings are visible in the background. The two people carving and the man with the cane are visible in the background, as is the convenience store. Image 23 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed in or moved closer to the carving of the ram. Image 24 shows a man with sideburns and long hair wearing a hat similar to a fedora carving a small human figure with a chainsaw. His head and body are oriented toward the left-hand side of the image frame. He is crouching. Several other small carvings are seen on the ground beyond the carver. An Arco gas station and convenience store are visible in the background. Image 25 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man has moved around to the left-hand side of the small human carving he is working on. Here the man's head and body are turned partially toward the right-hand edge of the image. Image 26 is very similar to image 24, but here the man is standing and bending forward at the waist. Image 27 shows a bearded man wearing a stocking cap and a heavy coat using a chainsaw to work on a wood carving of a bear. The man's head and body are oriented toward the left-hand side of the image frame. The Arco station is visible in the background. Image 28 is similar to the previous image, but here the man with the stocking cap's back is toward the camera. Image 29 shows the man with the long hair and fedora-like hat crouching down and working on a chainsaw carving of a small, standing bear. He is facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. A man and a woman are standing in the background and looking at the other carvings in the background. Image 30 shows the bearded man with the stocking cap working on a carving of a bear standing on all four legs. The carving is laying on its side. The man is facing toward the right-hand side of the image. The man is standing upright. Image 31 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is bending his torso to this left and away from the camera. Image 32 shows both the bearded man in the stocking cap and the man with long hair in the fedora-like hat working on chainsaw carvings. The man in the stocking cap is on the left-hand side of the image, and is the closer of the two to the camera. The man in the fedora-like hat is on the right-hand side of the image and is farther away from the camera. Image 33 also shows the two men working on their cahinsaw carvings, but here the photographer has moved and the two men have their backs toward the camera. There are several vehicles parked in the background. Image 34 shows two people on one motorcycle stopped to watch the two men work on their carvings. The people on the motorcycle are on the left-hand side of the image, and they are facing away from the camera. The two men working on carvings are on the right-hand side of the image and they are facing away from the camera. Image 35 shows the two men working on carvings. The man in the fedora-like hat is on the left-hand side of the image and is facing toward the right-hand side of the image. The man in the stocking cap is on the right-hand side of the image and is facing toward the camera. Cars driving past and a gas station are visible in the background. Image 36 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man in the fedora-like hat is crouched down and facing away from the camera. Image 37 is very similar to the previous two images, but here the man in the fedora-like hat is standing and bent over at the waist. He is facing toward the right-hand side of the image. The man in the stocking cap is standing and facing away from the camera. There is a large discoloration on the left-hand side of this image.
