Description

People, Some Unidentified, 1978. These five black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show a large K-mart store with empty shelves, and two men and two women having drinks on what appears to be a stage set made to resemble a living room. Image 33a shows the K-Mart store with empty shelves. Several rows of empty shelving are visible in the background, and a large number of people are standing in a line which goes through the store. Image 34a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 35a shows some of the people in line inside the K-Mart store. All of these people are facing away from the camera. This image is oriented vertically. Image 36a is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Image 37a also shows people standing in line, but this image shows the people at the front of the line. The people at the front are waiting at the service desk of the K-mart store. Almost all of the people are facing away from the camera in this image. Image 38a shows many people waiting in the line. Here the people are largely facing toward the camera. Image 39a shows two men and two women in formalwear and holding drinks in their hands. One man and one woman are seated, and one man and one woman are standing behind the seated couple. Stage lights are visible at the top of the image, showing that this room is actually the set for a play. The seated woman is on the left, and she is wearing a blazer with a matching vest. The seated man is on the right, and he is wearing a suit and tie. The standing woman is on the left, and she is wearing a dress with a feather boa or similar material on her collar. The standing man is on the right, and he is wearing glasses and a suit and tie. Images 40a through 42a are all nearly identical to image 39a. The images in group "b" show what appears to be a rolling irrigation system, a valve indicator post for a water (probably fire suppression system), and a fire hydrant. Image 30b shows the rolling irrigation system out in the middle of a small, grassy field. There are two large, spoked wheels, one at each end of the system. Between the two wheels is a horizontal shaft with curved metal pieces coming off of it. The irrigation system is in the center of the image, approximately 30 feet from the photographer. Image 31b shows a more close-up view of the system. The wheel nearest to the camera is in the lower-left quadrant of the image. Image 32b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their left by several feet. The wheel nearest to the camera is in the lower-right portion of the image. Images 33b is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved back toward the right by several feet. Image 34 shows a valve indicator post for an industrial water system, likely a fire suppression system. This valve indicator post is approximately three feet tall, and has a window on the front which shows that the valve is open. To the left of this vale indicator is a second, slightly smaller metal post with a fitting on the top which branches off into two horizontal connectors. These connectors are closed off with plugs. Set into the ground in front of these two objects is a metal hatch. Image 35b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved slightly closer to the valve post and other post. Image 36b shows a fire hydrant from only a few feet away. Image 37b is nearly identical to the previous image. The images in group "c" show a close-up of a man's face, a woman working at a desk, and a second man working with an upright drafting table. These images were likely captured at the offices of the Lacey Leader newspaper. Image 8c shows a close-up of a man's (Ken Balsley) face. The man is wearing glasses and has a mustache. Mr. Balsley's chin is below the bottom edge of this image frame. Image 9c shows a woman seated at a desk set into the corner of a room. The woman is looking over her left shoulder toward the camera. She has short, wavy hair and is wearing glasses and a loose-fitting, patterned sweater. Image 10c is similar to the previous image, but here the woman is looking down and writing. Image 11c shows a man (Ed Bagley) standing in front of a drafting table which is set to a fairly upright position. He appears to be designing the layout for a page of the Lacey Leader newspaper. Mr. Bagley is facing toward to the right-hand side of the image frame. He is reaching down for something that is just below the bottom edge of the image frame. Image 12c is very similar to the previous image, but here Mr. Bagley is looking at a small object held in both hands near to his chest.
