Description

Unidentified, Unknown Dates. These twenty-four black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using many separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show a town meeting taking place. Image 39a shows five adults seated at two tables in what appears to be a classroom. Text mounted on the far wall reads "VALENTINES" and "DILLY-DING-A." Images 40a shows a balding man in glasses wearing a blazer seated at a table. He facing away from the camera and is touching his chin with his left hand. This man appears to be Dick Johnson. Two other men and one woman are visible in the background. Image 41a shows a woman speaking from behind a podium. She has shoulder-length hair and is wearing hoop earrings and two necklaces. She is wearing a nametag, but it is not readable. There are three people seated in the foreground and facing toward the woman. There are eight pieces of paper hanging on the wall with text filling each piece. Image 42a shows a man (Dick Johnson) seated at a table. He is leaning on his left arm and looking toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Several other men and women are seated at tables near Mr. Johnson. Image 43a shows a man speaking in front of seven seated men and women. The speaker has glasses and a mustache and is wearing a vertically-striped button up shirt and a tie. The man is standing just to the right of center of the image. Image 44a shows the small crowd of people seated at the meeting. Ten people are visible in the image. Image 1a shows the man with glasses and a mustache seen in image 43a again addressing the small crowd of people at the meeting. Here the man is to the left of the center of the image. Image 2a shows approximately five people standing in a line and facing the right-hand side of the image. The photographer is standing at one end of the line, so it is difficult to see how many people are actually in the line. These people all appear to be men, and most or all of them appear to be holding paper documents. They are shown from roughly the waist up. Other people are visible in the background, and a school lunch table is partially visible to the right of the people standing in a line. Image 3a shows the man group of people standing in a line, but here the photographer has moved away from the people in the line and also moved slightly to the right. Image 4a shows a man in a suit and tie standing on a basketball court and reading a document in his left hand. There are school lunch-style tables on the basketball court, and several men appear to be folding or unfolding a large piece of paper on a table immediately behind the man reading the document. A large sign reading "TOWN ME" is visible in the background. This sign, in its entirety, reads "TOWN MEETING '76." Image 5a shows man in a blazer standing and facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Several other people are visible standing in the background. All of these people are standing amongst the lunch tables. The full "town meeting" sign is visible in the background. There is a basketball hoop above the sign. Image 6a shows two people each holding up one very large piece of paper with writing on them. The text is mostly unreadable, but at the bottom of the piece of paper on the right is "The End." Image 7a shows a woman with very wavy hair which is either done up or is short. She is wearing a turtleneck top with two bejeweled brooches at her left shoulder. She is shown from the mid-torso up. Her body is oriented toward the left-hand side of the image, but her head is turned toward the camera. She is smiling. Image 8a is nearly identical to the previous image. The images in group "b" show a meeting, which may be one of the meetings seen in group "a." Image 31b shows a man and a woman performing a dance routine. The woman is on the right, has long hair, and is wearing a flapper-type dress with fringe. The man is on the left and has medium-length hair and sideburns. He is wearing a vest over a short-sleeved, striped shirt. Both dancers are facing the audience. Visible hanging on the wall is in the upper-right corner of the image is a banner which reads "AMERICAN REVOLUTION BICENTENNIAL" and "1776-1976." Some framed paintings or photographs are hanging on the wall to the left of the banner. Lines on the floor suggest that this meeting room doubles as a basketball court. Image 32b is very similar to the previous image, but here the dancers are looking toward each other. Image 33b shows five men, four of whom are wearing suits and ties standing under the "TOWN MEETING '76" sign described in group "a." All of the men are wearing nametags, but none of them are readable. One man is holding open a folder of some kind, but the text on the front of the folder is also unreadable. These men appear to be making an announcement. Images 34b and 35b are nearly identical to image 33b. Image 36b shows two seated men writing. Both men are wearing glasses. One of the men is at the center of the image, and the other is in the bottom-right corner of the image. The man at the center has a typewriter in front of him. Several other people are visible in the background and foreground. Image 37b shows two older women and one young man seated on the left-hand side of the table. There are many documents, some of which are very large, laying on the table. Two other people are seated on the right-hand side of the image. Image 38b shows five people seated at a table with a woman (Karen Frasier). Ms. Frasier is centered in the image, and she is leaning forward on her right hand. She is listening to one of the other people at the table. Image 39b shows a man with medium-length hair and glasses (Bill Bush) seated at a table and writing on a document held in his left hand. Image 40 shows approximately eight people seated at several school lunch-style tables. The images in group "c" show a group of children and several adults engaged in what appears to be a "Pioneer Days"-type set of educational activities. Image 18c shows three children in pioneer-style costumes seated and manipulating some small objects in their hands. Two of the children are wearing bonnets. Image 19c shows five children gathered around several tables in a classroom. On the table in front of the boy at the center of the image is a shoe box filled with what appears to be pieces of fabric. Other pieces of fabric are laying on the table. These children are likely working on a project concerning quilting. Image 20c shows a girl in a bonnet seated at a table. There is a very small woven basket in her hands. She is acing toward the left-hand side of the image, and she is shown from the mid-torso up. She is smiling. Image 21c shows a boy in a polo shirt holding a piece of fabric in his hands. He is shown from roughly the waist up. Image 22c shows a woman in a bonnet and dress using a spinning wheel. The wheel is at the bottom center, the woman spinning is on the left, and several children are watching from the right-hand side of the image. Image 23c shows the woman who was using the spinning wheel in the previous image, but here she is holding what appears to be a large bundle of some fiber, which is presumably used with the spinning wheel to create thread. This image was captured from the spinning woman's right-hand side. The woman is facing away from the camera. Several children are visible in the background. Image 24c shows the woman in the bonnet from the previous two images holding up a multi-pronged fork-like tool made from twigs. Several children are looking at the tool. The woman in the bonnet is in the lower-left quadrant of the image, she is facing toward the right-hand side of the image, and she is shown in profile. Image 25c shows several children gathered around a table working with crumpled pieces of what appears to be aluminum foil. The child nearest to the camera is wearing a dress with a closely-spaced dot pattern on it. She is also wearing a fabric belt or sash. She is not facing toward the camera. This image is oriented vertically. Image 26c is very similar to the previous image, but here the right-hand side of the girl in the dotted dress's face is visible. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 27c shows one girl and two boys gathered around a table. They appear to be stacking pieces of a semi-rigid material. Image 28c shows a boy in a plaid, button-up shirt standing next to a table and resting both hands on the table. Another child is to the left of the first child, and this second child is writing something on a notecard or similar paper item. This child's face is very close to the table/piece of paper he is writing on. Image 29c shows two girls and one boy standing in a row alongside a table and each mixing something in a bowl. The girls are at left and center, and the boy is on the right. Image 30c shows five girls gathered around a bucket on top of a table. The bucket is likely an ice cream maker. All of the girls are reaching out and touching the bucket. This image is oriented vertically. Image 31c is very similar to the previous image, but here the girl at the far left is not touching the bucket. Image 32c shows a similar scene to the last two images, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Image 33c shows a girl in a bonnet holding a jar. Image 34c shows seven children standing roughly in a row and mostly facing toward the camera. These children are shown from the chest up. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 35c is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned to the left slightly. Image 36c is similar to the previous two images, but here the image is oriented vertically. Here a little boy is standing in front of the other children. Image 37c shows two girls and one boy standing in a row. The girl at left is holding a jar, the boy at center is holding three fabric quilting squares, and the girl at right is wearing a bonnet. These children are shown from the mid-thigh up. The images in group "d" show five men and two women all in business attire posing together for a group photo in front of a sign on the side of a building which reads "SOUTH SOUND REALTY." Three people are in the front row: the man at the center and one woman to either side. All of the people in the back row are men. All of the people are looking toward the camera and smiling. All of the images in this group (29d-38d) are virtually identical. The images in group "e" show a man (Mike Kreidler) posing for portrait photos, two men performing an eye exam on a little girl, and two men crouched down in a large area filled with many potted plants. Image 2e shows Mike Kreidler wearing a blazer over a turtleneck sweater. His head and body are turned partially toward the left-hand side of the image. He is smiling and looking toward the camera. Image 3e is very similar to the previous image, but here Mr. Kreidler is turned partially toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 4e is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 5e shows two young men, both wearing plaid pants performing an eye exam on a little girl. The young man on the left is holding an opthalmoscope up to his right eye and touching the girl's face with his right hand. The second young man is at center and is watching. The girl is at the right. Image 6e is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 18e shows two men crouched down in a large area filled with many potted plants. The men are facing each other and are speaking. Image 19e is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 20e is nearly identical to image 2e. They Clauses are sitting on a bench in front of what appears to be a large, elaborate fireplace. This images is oriented horizontally. Image 2f is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 3f is very similar to the image 1f, but here the two little girls are holding hands. Images 4f and 5f are nearly identical to image 1f. Image 7f shows the front of a store in a mall, presumably South Sound Center. The store's sign reads "Holly Hill House." Above the door reads "MAD SHOP." A sign over the left-hand window reads "ELECTROPHONIC STEREO." A sign over the right-hand window reads "BLACKLIGHT-POSTERS-LPs." There is a poster advertising radio station KGY on the front door of the shop. Images 8f through 11f are nearly identical to image 7f. Image 13f shows a balding man in glasses wearing a suit and holding in his right hand a dress shirt which is folded in such a way to suggest that it is brand new. He is looking downward and to his left. Image 14f is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking to the left of the camera and appears to be speaking. Image 15f is similar to the previous two images, but here the man is looking downward. Image 16f shows the man reaching for a knife on a table. Next to the knife is a short stack of paper plates and a cake. Image 17f shows the man about to cut the cake. He is facing toward the camera and tipping his head slightly to his right. Image 11h shows a marching band marching down the street. They are all wearing matching jackets and slacks. Several drummers and one tuba player are the nearest people to the camera. Image 12h shows a different float carrying three women who appear to be beauty pageant contestants. It is unclear whether this float or the float shown in image 10h are carrying the Lakefair queen and princesses. The images in group "i" show what appears to be a small clay figurine. This figurine consists of a face with very small eyes, one hand laying on each side of the face, legs and a hat similar the a newsboy cap with a small tassle on the top.
