South Sound Center, Unknown Dates. These four black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created suing four separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show a visual art event taking place at South Sound Center. Image 32a shows a small group of people gathered around a young man using a pottery wheel. This image was captured inside one of the walkway areas of South Sound Center. Three stores are visible in the background. From left to right, these are: Mode O' Day, The Guardsman, and Woolworth's. What appears to be a corner of a painting in the foreground is occupying the bottom-left corner of the image. Image 33a is very similar to the previous image, but here several of the onlookers have changed position slightly. Image 34a shows two older women viewing several paintings mounted on sandwich board-type wooden frames. An entrance to the mall is visible in the background, as is an entrance to Ivan's Diner. Image 35a very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved approximately eight feet closer to the women. Image 36a is nearly identical to the previous image.
The images in group "b" show one of the walkways inside South Sound Center, and the exterior of a house. Image 17b shows a walkway inside South Sound Center. This image is looking down the length of the walkway. Approximately 40 feet down the walkway from the camera is a man in overalls standing and using a roller on a long handle on the floor of the walkway. He is facing toward the left-hand side of the image. Several other workers are visible farther down the walkway. Image 18b is very similar to the previous image, but here the man using the roller is facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 19 shows a different walkway within South Sound Center. This image is also looking down the length of the walkway. In the bottom-left corner of the image is a sign on a stand which reads "PLEASE! PARDON OUR MESS." The sign also mentions that new floors are being installed. Behind this sign are two benches and a pile of items such as hoses, buckets, and mops. Farther down the walkway are customers, stores and a clock on top of a column. Image 20b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 21b shows the front exterior of a single-storey, rambler-style home.
The images in group "c" show walkways within South Sound Center, and two bulldozers doing demolition. Image 34c looks down the length of a walkway inside South Sound Center. The store nearest to the camera is called "Something Special." Images 35c and 36c are nearly identical to image 34c. Image 37c show a view down the opposite direction of the same walkway seen in the previous three images. A portion of the "Something Special" sign is visible near the top-right corner of the image. A bench and a concrete plants are visible near the bottom-left corner of the image. Image 38 shows two bulldozers doing demolition. The bulldozer to the left is on treads, and the one on the right is on wheels. The wheeled bulldozer is dumping large chunks of concrete in a dumpster. A 7-11 store is visible in the background near the center of the image.
The images in group "d" show a man seated in a chair, and men is suits holding shovels. Image 27d shows a man with glasses wearing a blazer, sweater-vest and slacks. He is seated in an overstuffed chair and has a closed book in his lap. He appears to be in a home. Image 28d shows three men in suits each holding a shovel. They are standing in an area of dirt and gravel. The man on the right is Bob Blume. Image 28d is nearly identical to the previous image. A strip along the right-hand edge of the image suggests that this may be a photo of a photo. Image 30d shows six men in suits holding shovels. A seventh man in a suit is sitting in the operator's chair of a piece of heavy equipment, such as a bulldozer or backhoe.Made/Created
