Description

Lakefair Parade and Carnival, Unknown Dates. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show the Lakefair carnival and parade from an unknown year. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film rolls from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show children riding carnival rides, a group photo with adults and children, and a child posing for photos. Image 44a shows a little girl riding a carnival merry-go-round. The girl has pigtails in her hair and is wearing a sweatshirt and plaid pants. There is a pinback button on her sweatshirt which reads "AMERICA'S GETTING INTO TRAINING." Her merry-go-round seat is a horse. The horse's head is raised up. Image 1a is very similar to the previous image, but here the horse the girl is riding on's head is tipped downward. It is unclear if the girl is riding a different horse than in the previous image, or if the horse's head moves. Image 2a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 3a shows two adult women, one adult man, two male children and one female child posing for a group photo. From left to right in the front row is: a little boy with glasses wearing a horizontally-striped shirt and crossing his arms, a little girl with a clip in her hair wearing a cardigan, and a little boy with a sweatshirt tied around his waist. From left to right in the back row is a woman with wavy hair wearing glasses and a loosely-knitted shirt, a woman with short hair wearing a collared sweatshirt, and a man with a mustache wearing glassed and a thin jacket. Image 4a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 5a shows a little girl riding a carnival ride. The little girl has pigtails in her hair, and appears to be the same girl in images 44a-2a. The ride seat she is sitting is spotted, and may have been made to look like a strawberry. Image 6a shows the little girl seen in images 3a and 4a sitting cross-legged on the ground. Her body is turned partially toward the right-hand side of the image, and she is looking toward the camera. Image 7a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 8a is very similar to the two previous images, but here the girl's hair is tied back with a bandana or similar object. She also has a circle of make-up on her face. It appears that someone is applying clown make-up to her face in steps, and taking a photo with each step. Here the girl's head and body are oriented directly toward the camera. Her hands are in her lap with the fingertips of both hands touching. Image 9a is very similar to the previous image, but here the girl is folding her arms at her chest. Image 10a is very similar to the previous image, but here there is an ankh symbol on her nose and lower forehead. Her arms are wrapped under her legs. Image 11a is very similar to the previous image, but here the girl has eye and lip make-up on her face and her arms are crossed at her chest. Image 13a is very similar to the previous image, but here the girl's hands are in her lap. The girl's mouth is open. Image 14a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 15a shows the little girl holding her right arm up in front of her chest and looking down at a small mirror held by someone partially visible at the left-hand side of the image. Image 16a shows the girl holding the mirror up in front of her with both hands. Image 17a shows an adult woman with clown make-up leaning over next to the little girl. Both are looking toward the camera and smiling. The images in group "b" show a parade and a portion of the Lakefair Queen pageant. Image 40b shows a crowd of people gathered along the side of a road to watch the parade. These people are mostly on the left-hand side of the image. A little boy just to the left of the center of the image is wearing a horizontally-striped shirt and shorts. He appears to be dancing. A woman pushing a shopping cart and a girl walking next to her are visible at the right-hand edge of the image. Image 41b shows a parade float being pulled by a riding lawnmower. Approximately five young people are riding on the float itself, and a man with a mustache in a hat is driving the lawnmower. A banner on the float reads "The Jaycee Creed." Image 42b shows a large float being pulled by a semi truck. The float has a dome-like structure on the back, under which a young woman in a pageant gown is partially visible. Two other young women in pageant gowns are riding on the side of the float. There is a figure meant to look like a bugler or trumpeter mounted on the forward part of the float. The bugle/trumpet has a banner hanging off of it which reads "MASON COUNTY FOREST FESTIVAL." The young women riding on the float are likely participants (including the winner) of the Mason County Forest Queen pageant. Image 43b shows two clowns crouching down in front of the crowd along the road at the parade. The crowd is lined up along the left-hand side of the image. The clowns are on the right-hand side and they are facing directly toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 3b shows a child putting on a full-sized set of firefighting gear. The child is standing in a parking lot and a group of people are standing around in the background. Image 4b is very similar to the previous image, but here the child is much nearer to the camera. Image 5b is fairly similar to the previous image, but here a fire engine is partially visible at the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 10b shows a young woman wearing a pageant gown and speaking into a microphone on a stand. This young woman is standing on a boardwalk which is presumably the Olympia boardwalk. The young woman's head and body are turned directly toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Two men in suits are visible conferring near the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 11b shows four young women in pageant gowns seated along a wall on the boardwalk. All are holding bouquets, the rightmost two young women are also wearing tiaras. The young woman second from the right is also wearing a long cape and looking toward the camera. Image 12b shows four young women in pageant gowns seated along the same wall as the women in the previous image. All of the women are holding bouquets. The images in group "c" show the inside and outside of a food truck or food vending trailer unit. Image 37c shows two men inside of the food truck/trailer. The man on the left is wearing glasses and a plaid shirt and the man on the left has a mustache and is wearing glasses and a button-up shirt. The man on the right is holding a food item with a pair of tongs in his right hand. The food item appears to be a piece of fried fish. A deep fryer is partially visible on the lower-right corner of the image. Image 38c shows the man with the mustache from the previous image inside the front-counter portion of the food truck/trailer. He is handing a box of food to a woman standing at the counter. One other woman and two men are also standing at the counter. A sign from advertising the food items available is hanging off of the roof of the truck/trailer. Image 39c shows two women and three men standing inside the kitchen of a mobile food vendor truck or trailer. Two of the men are wearing cowbiy hats and one of the men is wearing a paper cap. "Jaycees" is a nickname for the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (and divisions thereof. Printed along one of the long edges of all of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
