Royal Rangers, Unknown Date. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show people participating in and observing a series of pinewood derby races. The participants and observers are members of the Royal Rangers, or family members and friends of Royal Ranger members. Image 24 shows seven boys alongside a ramp approximately one foot wide and quite long. The boys are on the right-hand side of the image. A man in glasses is standing next to the top end of the ramp and is holding a rope or cord attached to the ramp. Other adults and children are watching from the background. Image 25 shows boy and a male of indeterminate age standing near the top end of the ramp. Two pinewood derby cars are set at the top of the ramp. The boy is on the left-hand side of the image, and is facing toward the right-hand side of the image. He has wavy hair and is wearing a Royal Rangers shirt. The male of indeterminate age is wearing glasses and a Royal rangers shirt. His nametag reads "DAVID SCHLEWITZ." He is looking off toward the right of the camera. Image 26 shows Mr. Schlewitz standing near the top of the ramp and looking down at it. He is near the right-hand side of the image. A small crowd of boys are standing in the left-hand side of the image. Image 27 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 28 shows two pinewood derby cars beginning their descent down the ramp. Several adults are standing near the top of the ramp. Image 29 shows a group of people presumably watching one of the pinewood derby races. All are looking away from the camera, and several are wearing Royal rangers shirts. The young man at the center of the image is leaned forward quite far and seems extremely excited. Image 30 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 31 is similar to the previous two images, but here the boy at the center of the image is facing toward the camera and looking downward. He is wearing a nametag which reads "Erin Peterson." Image 32 shows a young man in a Royal Rangers shirt kneeling on the floor and looking toward his right. Approximately six adult men are gathered around the boy and looking in the same direction. Image 33 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 34 shows a boy with curly hair wearing a Royal Rangers shirt and looking toward the left-hand side of the image frame. He appears very sad or anxious. This young man is shown from the mid-torso up. Another boy is partially visible at the right-hand side of the image frame. Three adults are visible standing along the wall in the background. Image 35 is very similar to the previous image, but here the young man's mouth is opened wide and his arms are raised slightly. Image 36 is similar to the previous two images, but here the young man is bending down and looking downward.
Pinewood derby cars are small, gravity-powered cars intended for racing. The Royal Rangers are a Christian-based Boy Scout-like organization organized under the Assemblies of God churches.
