Description

First Annual Mascot Expo and State Competition, 1981. These four black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show mascots performing inside the Capital Mall in Olympia, Washington. Image 9 shows a person dressed in a ram costume standing and facing directly toward the camera. The person's arms are bent up at the elbow and down at the wrist. A handful of spectators are visible at the right-hand edge of the image. Image 10 shows a woman dressed as a lumberjack dancing from the right-hand side of the image toward the left. She is holding a single-bitted axe in her right hand. Her legs are bent at the knee slightly and her left hand is on her left hip. Image 11 again shows the person in a ram costume. This person is walking toward the camera. Many spectators are standing in a roughly linear group which extends from the upper-left of the image toward the bottom-right. Image 12 is very similar to the previous image, but here the person in the ram costume is looking downward and appears to be engaged in a foot-shuffling dance. Image 13 shows the woman dressed as a lumberjack. She is facing directly toward the right-hand side of the image and is holding her axe with both hands. What appears to be the top of the back of a chair is in the lower foreground of the image. Image 14 is similar to the previous image, but here the lumberjack is holding her axe in her right hand and is looking over toward the right of the camera. A person wearing a shirt with very ruffled sleeves is visible in the background to the right of the lumberjack. Image 15 shows the lumberjack walking from the left-hand side of the image frame to the right-hand side of the image frame. A person in a bird costume is visible in the background to the left of the lumberjack. Image 16 shows a small child standing slightly in front of a loose row of adults who are presumably watching the mascots. The child's mouth is opened very wide. Image 17 shows a person dressed in a costume which is perhaps intended to resemble a black bear. This person appears to be waving pom-poms in the air. This person is facing toward the right-hand side of the image. Image 18 shows a person dressed as in a bird costume with their arms spread out to the sides. This person is facing directly toward the camera and raising their right leg, which is bent at the knee. Image 19 shows a portion of the crowd at the mascot event. These spectators are facing toward the left-hand side of the image. A little boy is visible clapping at the center of the image. Image 20 shows the person in the bird costume facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Their arms are out in front of them, and they are lifting their right leg. Image 21 shows the lumberjack facing partially toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Her weight is on her right foot, and she is leaning forward on it. Her left hand is held up over her eyes in a gazing gesture. Her axe is in her right hand and resting on her shoulder. Image 22 shows the lumberjack facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. She is holding the axe with the cutting edge facing toward her face. Her weight is on her right foot and she is leaning backward on it. Image 23 shows the lumberjack preparing to swing her axe at a fake tree. The lumberjack is facing away from the camera. Image 24 is very similar to the previous image, but here the axe is hanging upside down out of her left hand. Image 25 is similar to the previous two images, but here the lumberjack is jumping up with her arms in the air. She is facing toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 26 shows the person dressed as the ram standing with their arms out to their sides and raising their right leg. Image 27 is similar to the previous image, but here the person's arms are extended out to their sides and diagonally downward. Printed at intervals along the right-hand long edges of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
