Description

Various Local Businesses, Unknown Dates. These fourteen black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using several separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show a car driving down a road, a parade, a vacant building,a building under construction, an exterior shot of the Furniture Center of Olympia building, and the exterior of the Tuxedo Junction restaurant. Image 2a shows a car driving down a road with a procession of people following behind. The car has a set of lights on the top similar to a police cruiser, but does not appear to have any insignia on the visible portions of the car. The road is crossing the image from the center of the right-hand edge toward the bottom-left corner of the image. The car is traveling toward the bottom-left corner of the image. A column of people are following behind the car, and the two men at the front of the column are each holding a flag. The man on the left is holding an American flag, and the other man is holding a flag which is difficult to make out. This flag does appear to have a wheel or gear logo at its center, and may be a Rotary International flag. A Firestone tire store is in the background. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 3a shows the same procession as the previous image, but here the car has passed beyond the image frame. Here the two men holding the flags are near the center of the image. This image is oriented vertically. Image 4a is similar to the previous two images, but here a column of early automobiles is passing the camera. These automobiles appear to be models from the mid-1910s through the 1920s, and perhaps into the early 1930s. The Blume Realty building is partially visible in the background along the right-hand edge of the image. The Evergreen Savings building is visible to the left of the Blume Realty building. Image 5a shows a man and woman seated in one of the early automobiles. The car is facing toward the left-hand side of the image. The man is on the left, and the woman is on the right. The woman is wearing a very long, thick skirt and the man appears to be wearing a cap. Image 6a shows the exterior of a vacant building. The doors and windows of this building have pointed arches. The building itself appears to be adobe or some similar material. A street sign is visible at the left-hand edge of the image which shows that the building was located on Lacey Street. Image 7a shows a building under construction. Only the frame and the roof of the building are finished or nearly finished. Steel I-beams and other building materials are stacked in the right-hand side of the image foreground. A sign is partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Many evergreen trees are visible behind the building. Images 8a and 9a are nearly identical to image 7a. Image 10a shows an exterior shot of the Furniture Center of Olympia building. The building is a long rectangle with a peaked roof which over hangs the front of the store. The peak of the roof is parallel to the long axis of the building. There is a sign in front of the store which reads "Furniture Center OF OLYMPIA" and "BEDDING SALE TWIN 79 FULL 89 QUEEN 119." This sign is near the right-hand edge of the image. The parking lot, also at the right-hand side of the image, is empty. Image 39a shows an exterior shot of the Virgil Adams Company Real Estate office. The building is single-storey and has a shingled roof similar to a Mansard roof. The building is surrounded with a tall, wooden fence which is attached to the roof with pieces of wood. Three cars are parked in the parking lot. Image 40a shows an exterior shot of the Tuxedo Junction restaurant building. The building is made of brick and is octagonal. A portion of a railroad passenger or dining car extends out from one of the walls on the right-hand side of the image. Three cars are parked next to the building, and one additional car is partially visible in the middle of the right-hand edge of the image frame. Images 41a through 43a are nearly identical to image 40a. The images in group "b" show a woman seated at a desk and the parking lots outside of South Sound Shopping Center. Image 20b shows a woman seated at a desk in a small office. There are two desks in the room, both on the right-hand side of the image. The woman is seated at the farther of the two desks, and is facing toward the camera. She is looking downward at what appears to be a newspaper on her desk. The woman has hair parted at the center and tied back. She is wearing glasses. A name placard on the left-hand end of the unoccupied desk reads "KEN BALSLEY." A large double door occupies most of the rear wall of the office. This image was likely taken at the Lacey Leader offices. Image 21b shows a parking lot of the South Sound Shopping Center. The nearest store to the camera is Sears, which is near the right-hand side of the image frame. Other stores are visible to the left of Sears, but their signs are too small to make out. There are many cars in the parking lot, but none are near to the camera. Images 22b through 25b are nearly identical to image 21b. Image 26b shows a different portion of the South Sound Center parking lot. Here People's is the nearest store to the camera, and this store is near the left-hand side of the image frame. To the right of People's is the Red Bull restaurant and a Pay-n-Save. The signs for the stores farther to the right are too small to make out. Images 27b and 28b are nearly identical to image 26b. Image 29b is very similar to the previous three images, but here the photographer has backed away from the shopping center by approximately 150 feet. Image 30b also shows a portion of the parking lot at South Sound Center. Here the Pay-n-Save store is centered in the image background. Visible to the right of the Pay-n-Save is a Leed's Shoes and a Lerner Shops. Image 31b is very similar to image 23b, but here the photographer has panned to the left slightly. Here the right-hand end of the Sear building is outside of the image frame. Image 32b is nearly identical to image 24b. Image 33b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved approximately 80 feet closer to the building. The images in group "c" show a fire hydrant in the South Sound Shopping Center parking lot and a flooded section of a road. Image 44c shows a fire hydrant in the South Sound Center parking lot. The hydrant is surrounded by four short metal pillars. The People's building is visible on the right-hand side of the image background. A parked pickup truck is partially visible to the right of the hydrant. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 1c is nearly identical to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 2c is very similar to image 1c, but here the photographer has zoomed in on or moved closer to the hydrant. Image 3c shows the hydrant from a different angle. Visible in the background is the Seattle Trust bank building. Image 4c is very similar to image 1c, but here the photographer has zoomed in or moved closer to the hydrant. Image 11c shows a Chevrolet pickup truck on a road on the verge of a partially flooded section of the road. This flooded area is covered with many puddles and has a large amount of gravel or dirt around the puddles. A sign for a 76 gas station is partially visible along the left-hand edge of the image frame. Businesses visible along the right-hand side of the road include the Virginia Woods Dance Studio, the Northwest Taekwon-Do Association, South Sound Realty and Arden's TV. Image 12c shows a road curving gently to the left in the distance. The Market Square sign is visible near the right-hand side of the image. The sign for Chet's Family Kitchen is visible below the Market Square sign. A Shell gas station, and Arco gas station, a 7-11 and Erie's Septic Service are visible near the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 13c is very similar to image 11c, but here the cars are driving in opposite directions on the road. The pickup truck is not visible in this image. Image 14c is similar to the previous image, but here just one car about to cross the flooded area of street is visible. Image 15c shows a shot looking down a four-lane road with many cars driving on it. The sign nearest to the camera on the right-hand side of the road reads "FLAIR BEAUTY SALON" and "PARKING IN REAR." The sign nearest to the camera on the left-hand side of the image reads "Lacey Lanes." Other signs and businesses are visible in the distance. The images in group "d" show shots of the exterior of the People's store at South Sound Center, and parts of the parking lot. Image 22d shows the People's store. The building occupies the right-hand 5/6 of the image. Many cars are parked in the parking lot between the camera and the store. The image is oriented horizontally. Image 23d is nearly identical to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. Image 24d is very similar to image 22d, but here the photographer has moved approximately 30-40 feet to their left. Image 25d shows many cars parked in a parking lot. Many trees are visible in the background. Image 26d is very similar to image 23d, but here the photographer has moved closer to the building. The images in group "e" show shots of cars on roads passing buildings, and the front of the Gay 90's pizza parlor. Image 20e shows two cars oriented away from the camera on a road. One of the cars is only partially visible in the bottom-left corner of the image. Farther down the road is an SUV-type vehicle. Businesses visible along the left-hand side of the road include: Lacey Auto Parts, the Flavor Nook and the Melody Lane Tavern. Image 21e shows two partially-visible cars oriented toward the left-hand side of the image. Through the driver's side window of the nearer car is an older man in a brimmed hat and glasses. A metal box is partially visible in the bottom-left corner of the image. A Goodyear tire sign is visible in the background just above the center of the image. Image 22e shows the front of the Gay 90's pizza parlor. A portion of road is occupying the bottom half of the image. Image 23e is very similar to image 21e, but here the two cars near the camera have moved toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 24e is very similar to the previous image, but here the cars have progressed slightly farther toward the left-hand side of the image. The images in group "f" show two fireboxes shooting a fire extinguisher underneath a car in a parking lot. Image 43f shows the two firefighters shooting the fire extinguishers under the car. They are both standing immediately in front of the car. A third firefighter is standing behind the two others. The car is on the right-hand side of the image, and the firefighters are on the left-hand side of the image. Image 44f shows one of the firefighters firing his extinguisher into the front driver's-side wheel well of the car. Another firefighter is partially visible crouched down in front of the car. Image 1f is similar to the previous image, but here the firefighter previously firing the fire extinguisher into the wheel well is standing upright. The hood of the car is also open in this image. Image 2f shows three children putting on firefighter's pants. Nearer to the camera and arranged in a row are three firefighting jackets laying on the ground. A man in firefighting pants appears to be dancing in the background. Men, women and children are watching from the background. The images in group "g" show exterior shots of the Lacey Bank building. The building is very boxy, and is surrounded by large areas filled with gravel or wood chips. Small, sparse trees and bushes are arranged at intervals within this gravel or wood chips. The Lacey Bank logo occupies most of the largest wall facing the camera. All of these images (16g through 19g) are nearly identical to each other. The images in group "h" show a young man standing next to a bicycle which he is holding up. He is facing directly toward the camera and not smiling. He is wearing a t-shirt with two stripes running down the shoulders and sleeves. A sign attached to the handlebars of the bicycle reads "THURSTON COUNTY FAIR," "AUG. 4-7" and "LACEY WA." The young man is standing in front of the doors of a building. A sign above the door reads "RECREATION HALL." Both of these images (1h and 2h) are nearly identical the each other. The single image in group "i" (17i) show a fire engine parked in front of a billboard. The fire engine is oriented toward the left-hand side of the image frame. The stabilizer legs of the fire engine are extended. Several firefighters are milling about on and around the fire engine. The billboard behind the fire engine has Uncle Sam on it and reads "TOWN MEETING MARCH 20 EVERYONE WELCOME." The Tuxedo Junction restaurant was housed in the building which originally housed the Richard's Roundhouse restaurant. The building was very unique, being a brick octagon with a train car embedded within it. The location later became the Rib Eye Junction restaurant.
