Description

Frozen Lake, Unknown Dates. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. According to Ken Balsley, these images were likely captured on Chambers Lake betwen 1974 and 1976. The images in group "a" show people walking and riding bikes on a frozen lake. Image 44a shows one person walking out on the ice. They are walking away from the camera. The shoreline is approximately ten feet to this person's right. Image 1a shows someone standing out on the frozen lake. They are facing toward the left and looking downward. The person is just to the right of the center of the image. Image 2a is very similar to the previous image, but here the person is walking. Image 3a shows three people standing in a group and sliding around on the ice. Images 4a and 5a are nearly identical to image 3a. Image 6a is similar to the previous three image, but here the shoreline is partially visible along the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 7a shows the three people standing on or near the shoreline of the frozen lake. Image 8a shows the three people standing roughly in a line on the ice. The shoreline is not far behind them. Image 9a shows two people walking on the ice. Image 10a shows four people riding bikes and one person walking one the ice. There is a boat launch partially visible in the bottom-right corner of the image. Image 11a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 12a is similar to the previous image, but here only three people are visible riding bikes, and the one closest to the camera appears to have partially fallen over. Image 13a is similar to the previous image, but here one of the bicyclists has fallen all of the way off of their bike. Image 14a is similar to the previous image, but here the person who has fallen off of their bike is farther out on the ice. Image 15a shows four people on bicycles and one person walking. All of these people appear to be children. All of these people are on the edge of the ice along the shore of a frozen lake. A portion of a boat launch is visible in the lower-right hand corner. The bicyclist nearest to the camera is facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 16a is very similar to the previous image, but here the bicyclist nearest to the camera is facing toward the upper-right corner of the image. Image 17a is similar to the previous two images, but here all of the people are farther down the lake shore away from the camera. The images in group "b" also show people walking and riding bicycles on a frozen lake. Image 37b shows a child riding a bicycle out toward the middle of the frozen lake. This child is Brad Balsley. Their bicycle is facing the left-hand side of the image frame, and the child on the bike is looking back toward the camera. Image 38b shows the same child riding their bike toward the camera. Two other people are visible walking on the ice in the background. Image 39b shows two people walking far out on the frozen lake. Image 40b is similar to the previous image, but here the person on the left appears to be sliding along on the ice toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 41b shows two people out on the ice. The person on the left is walking, and the person on the right is riding a bicycle. Image 42b shows three people out on the ice. The person at left is walking toward the right-hand side of the image. The person at center is down on their knees and elbows with their face very close to the ice. This person appears to be trying to look through the ice. The person at right is riding their bicycle toward the camera. Image 43b is similar to the previous image, but here the person down on the ice is at left, the person on the bicycle is at center, and the person walking in at the right. Image 44b shows a person riding a bike out on the ice. They are facing directly away from the camera. Image 1b is similar to the previous image, but here the person on the bike is riding toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 2b shows a person walking on the ice. Their body is oriented toward the right-hand side of the image frame and the person is looking downward. Image 3b is very similar to the previous image, but here the person is walking toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 4b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 5b shows two people far out on the ice. The person on the left is riding a bike. The person at the right is walking. Both people are traveling toward the left-hand side of the image. A third person is along the right-hand edge of the image much closer to the camera than the others. This person is also walking. Image 6b shows two children out on the ice. One is riding a bike toward the camera, and the other is sitting down on the ice. There is a piece of wood sticking out of the ice to the left of the two children. Image 7b is very similar to the previous image, but here the child on the bike is in front of the piece of wood. Image 8b shows two children riding bicycles out on the ice. Image 9b shows the two children riding their bikes toward the camera. A piece of wood is sticking out of the ice to the left of the children. Image 10b shows two children riding bikes out toward the center of the lake. A person closer to the camera is facing away from the camera and appears to be kicking rocks. Image 11b shows the two children riding bikes out of the ice. The piece of wood sticking out of the ice is between the two children. Image 12b shows two people walking on the ice near the shore. The person on the left appears to have just thrown an object. Image 13b shows a child sitting on the ice next to a bicycle laying on its side. This child appears to have just fallen off of the bike. Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
