MAD Fest, 1980. These four black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show people participating in performances and activities at the 1980 Music, Arts and Dance Festival in Lacey, Washington. These images were captured inside of the Capital Pavilion on the Saint Martin's campus. Image 4 shows a woman wearing a tank top and a man dressed as a clown standing next to each other. The woman is on the left, and the man is on the right. The woman is facing toward the left and appears to be speaking. The man is facing toward the camera with his hands either on his hips or in his pants pockets. A third person is partially visible in the lower-right corner of the image. Image 5 shows a rock band playing on a stage. The band members, from left to right, are: an electric guitarist, a drummer, a bassist (almost totally obscured behind the lead singer, the lead singer, a baritone sax player and a keyboard player. Image 6 shows the lead singer of the band facing generally toward the camera. He has a thick beard. He appears to be dancing. This man is likely George Barner. Image 7 shows a man in a glasses and a vertically-striped shirt holding up a microphone toward a person standing on a stage or platform and blowing up a balloon. Image 8 shows Mark Brown wearing a t-shirt and shorts attempting to balance an upside-down sink plunger with a basketball on top on his chin. George Barner is standing at the left-hand side of the image and is looking over at Mr. Brown. Image 9 shows Karen Fraser and Ken Balsley running across the floor of the pavilion toward the camera. George Barner is running behind them. Image 10 shows Karen Fraser and Ken Balsley walking across the floor of the pavilion. Karen Fraser's right hand is up near her face and the other is partially extended out in front of her. Ken Balsley is holding both arms up above his head and bent inward at the elbow. George Barner is at the right-hand side of the image looking over toward Ms. Fraser and Mr. Balsley. Image 11 shows a group of approximately 5-6 people standing in a rough circle. They appear to be congratulating each other. All of the people in this group appear to be wearing matching t-shirts. The people on the right-hand side of the group are Karen Fraser and Ken Balsley. The man at the left facing away from the camera appears to be Mark Brown. A man who is likely Father John Scott is seated near the left-hand edge of the image. A large crowd seated in bleachers is visible in the background. Image 12 shows a man holding and speaking into a microphone at left and Ken Balsley at the right. There is a trophy passing between these two people. Image 13 shows a group of people standing in kind of a line with some of their arms raised up. From left to right, these people are: Ken Balsley facing toward the right-hand side of the image (there are two men almost completely obscured behind Mr. Balsley), Mark Brown, Karen Fraser, an unknown man, and another unknown man who may be Mike Kreidler. Image 14 shows fourteen girls in dance attire posing for a group photo. Three young men are standing behind the girls. Image 35 shows a small child in overalls sitting in the lap of a man dressed as a clown. The man is facing toward the camera, and the child is looking over toward the right. Image 36 shows a man dressed as a clown passing a single flower to an older woman. The clown is on the left, and the woman is on the right. Image 37 shows two young woman performing a dance routine. A stage is visible in the background. Image 38 shows a little girl with long hair sitting on the pavilion floor. Image 39 shows six young women in crop-tops and jean shorts performing a dance routine in the upper-right corner of the image. The little girl from the previous image is sitting in the bottom-left quadrant of the image and is looking toward the dancers. A row of spectators are visible on the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 40 shows more of the dance routine seen in the previous image. Here four of the young women are standing in a row in the upper-right quadrant of the image. Two of the young women are kneeling and leaning forward on the floor near the little girl.
