Description

MAD Fest, 1980. These four black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show the 1980 MAD Festival parade and Miss Thurston County contestants.. Image 3 shows five young women in formal gowns posing together for a group photo. In the front row are two women. In the middle row are two women, spaced farther apart than those in the front row. In the back row is one young woman wearing a sash which reads "MISS THURSTON COUNTY." All five of these women are holding flower bouquets. These women are standing on a small, tiered platform with a large piece of fabric or paper hanging down behind them. The bleachers visible in the background suggest that this image was captured inside of Saint Martin's Capital Pavilion. Image 4 shows a scene from the 1980 MAD Fest parade. There is a float centered in the image with several people riding on it. Large letters on the front end of the float appear the read ANCIENT WORLD. There is a large piece of fabric providing shade for the float. This piece of fabric is held up on poles by two men walking alongside the float. Approximately 12-15 young women are also walking in formation with the float. Everyone on and around this float is wearing a tunic, except a bearded man out in front wearing a long robe-like garment. He is holding a tall staff with an ankh on the top. Image 5 shows a young woman wearing a crown and a long gown seated on a float. She appears to be holding a trophy. She appears to be the young woman seated as the centerpiece of the float in the previous image. Image 6 shows three young women in formal gowns seated on the hood of a sports car in the parade. There is a banner on the passenger's side door, but it is not readable in this image. A second car also with three young women in gowns riding on the hood is visible in the background. Image 7 shows the three young women riding on the car in the background of the previous image. The banner on the side of this car is partially readable. The readable sections reads "1980 Thurston County." Image 8 shows three young women in formal gowns riding on the hood of a car in the parade. There is a long line of similar cars following this car. Image 9 shows a man (Johnny Lewis) riding in the passenger seat of a car in the parade and waving out of the open window. An unknown man is driving that car. A woman (Ruth Lewis) is riding between the two men in the front seat. There is a banner hanging on the passenger side of the car which reads "GRAND MARSHALL Johnnie Lewis WIFE RUTH." Image 10 shows six people riding on a platform mounted on an open semi-truck trailer. A boy and a bearded man are playing guitar on the left-hand side of the image. A short wall on the edge of the platform is blocking the lower half of most of the people shown, so any instruments they may be playing are not visible. A cymbal from a drumset is visible at the right-hand end of the platform. A banner on the platform wall reads "JOHNNY LEWIS JUNIOR SWING BAND." Image 11 shows five children riding bicycles. An older child is out in front of the bicycles carrying a banner which reads "Timberland Regional Library." Image 12 shows a vintage fire engine in the parade. A man is riding on the passenger-side running board. He appears to be dressed as a firefighter clown. Image 13 shows the open cab of the vintage fire engine from the previous image. The firefighter-clown riding on the running board is in the left-hand side of the photo. To the right of this man is a Dalmatian riding on the bench seat in the fire engine's cab. A second man dressed as a firefighter-clown is driving the fire engine. Image 14 shows approximately twelve children in costumes walking in the parade. The three children at the front are carrying a banner which reads "THE STAR WARRIORS." All of these children are wearing masks, and some have cardboard or paper elements in their costumes. Image 15 shows a man in a short-sleeved dress shirt and tie walking in the parade. He has a suit jacket over his left arm. He is waving a balloon on a stick in his right hand. To the left of the man and float is partially visible. Two similarly-dressed men are walking in a line behind the first man. Image 16 shows two men dressed very similarly to the men shown in the previous image walking alongside a float. The float Both men are looking toward the camera. The float is behind the men, and it is decorated with very large imitation flowers with a large butterfly at the front. Image 17 shows one small child seated on the rear top of s station wagon while holding a balloon and waving. The back door of the station wagon is open, and this child's legs are hanging down over the opening. Two other children are seated in the open back of the station wagon. Image 18 shows a young woman wearing a crown and formal gown riding on the hood of a car in the parade. This young woman is waving toward the camera. Image 19 shows a skateboarder headed down a tall skateboarding ramp. Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
