2007-012.E430PDescription
Model Home, 1974. These thirteen black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using six separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show exterior shots of a home, a man (Ron Rowe) posing next to a large sign, and an architectural sketch of the pictured home. Image 2a shows a wooden signpost with approximately twelve wooden, arrow-shaped signs radiating off from it in four directions. The top sign reads "AS THE CROW FLYS." Other locations included on the sign include Lacey, Saint Martin's and Saint Peter's Hospital. In the background is a wooded area. Image 3a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 4a shows a portion of an exterior wall of a home. This wall section is at a corner of the house. The wall is on the left-hand side of the image. This wall has a pattern shaped similarly to a honeycomb. A small rhododendron bust is growing at the base of the wall. A station wagon parked next to a tree is visible in the background of the right-hand side of the image. Image 5a shows the upper portion of a thin-limbed maple tree with small leaves. The roofline of the home is in the background. The roofline slants sharply from the top-left corner of the image to the bottom-right. Image 6a shows the front of the home. The home is two-storey, and the portion of the home seen here has a shape similar to an A-frame, but the roof does not extend all the way to the ground. Floor-to-ceiling windows occupy the center portion of the front side of the home, and these are on both floors. Another portion of the home is partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 7a shows the right-hand side of the portion of the home seen in the previous image. This portion of the house is on the left-hand side of the image. A wooded area is on the right-hand side of the image. Image 8a shows the front of the home from a distance. A picket fence is visible in the foreground. Several tree limbs hang down and partially obscure the home. Image 9a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 10a shows the front of the A-frame portion of the home. This image was captured from the left-hand side of the A-frame portion of the house, and looks across the front of the house at a sharp angle. Image 11a shows an exterior light fixture hanging from a corner section of the second floor of the home which overhangs the first floor. Image 12a shows a shallow flight of steps alongside the front of the house. This image looks across the front of the house at a sharp angle. The house is on the left-hand side of the image, and the right-hand side is occupied by a wooded area. Image 13a shows a two-flight section of stairs attached to the back of the home. The house is on the right-hand side of the image. Image 16a shows a bearded man (Ron Rowe) wearing glasses, a dress shirt, a tie, and plaid slacks standing next to a rather large sign. This image was captured in a business office. Mr. Rowe is at the left-hand side of the image, and the sign is on the right. Mr. Rowe has his hands folded at his waist and is looking at the sign. The sign bears a sketch of the house seen in images 2a-13a, as well as "1974 MODEL HOME" and identifies the architects of the house as "OLSON-ROWE" and the builders of the house as "JOHN BEVER CONSTRUCTION." This image is oriented vertically. Image 17a is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Image 18a is similar to the previous two images, but here the photographer has moved slightly farther away from Mr. Rowe. Mr. Rowe is looking toward the camera. This images is oriented horizontally. Image 19a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 20a shows Mr. Rowe standing on the right-hand side of the image with his left hand in his pants pocket. The sign is visible in the background. Images 22a and 23a are nearly identical to image 21a. Image 24a shows a close-up of the sketch of the home seen on the sign in the previous images. Image 25a is identical to the previous image.
The images in group "b" show exterior shots of the same model home seen in image group "a." Note that the images in this group are very light and somewhat difficult to make out. Image 32b shows the back of the house. A portion of the house with a window occupies the left-hand side of the image frame. The other main portion of the home is visible in the center of the image background. A wooden deck extends from the center bottom of the image toward the farther portion of the house. A second house is visible in the bottom-right quadrant of the image. Image 33b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 34b shows the back of the home from a greater distance than in the previous two images. Image 39b shows the front, left-hand section of the house occupying the left-hand side of the image. The shallow, concrete staircase along the front, left-hand side of the house is at the center-bottom of the image. The other section of the house is visible in the background. Image 2c shows a man in a patterned, button-up shirt and slacks standing at the bottom of the shallow staircase outside the model home. His hands are in his pockets, and his head and body are oriented directly toward the camera. He is looking toward the camera and smiling slightly. The front side of the house is visible along the left-hand side of the image. Images 3c and 4c are nearly identical to image 2c. Image 15c shows a open door. The door is made up of a sheet of glass with a frame around it. At the top of the door is "4003." A parked car is partially visible through the open doorway. Image 16c shows a long table completely filled with platters, plates and bowls full of many different types of food. This image looks down the long axis of the table. Three people are seated in a row along the wall beyond the far end of the table. The rightmost of these people is wearing a chef's hat. Image 17c shows a much closer-up shot of some of the food on the table. Three people are partially visible in the image background. Image 18c shows another shot of the food on the table.
