Bill Russell, 1976. These two black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show Bill Russell and an unknown man interacting with children in Saint Martin's Capital Pavilion. Image 16 shows an unknown man wearing a zip-up sweatshirt speaking to approximately 6-8 children. The unknown man is at right, and the group of children is at left. A second unknown man's head is partially visible beyond the group of children. Image 17 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man in the zip-up sweatshirt is facing toward the camera. He is also holding a basketball with both hands at waist-level. Image 18 shows Bill Russell wearing a cap and a thin jacket sitting on the lowest level of seat in the bleachers in the Capital Pavilion. He is looking over at and speaking to two girls seated to his right. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 19 is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved back from Mr. Russell and the two girls. Image 20 is very similar to image 18, but here the images is oriented vertically. Image 21 is very similar to image 18, but here the image was captured from a higher angle. Mr. Russell is also facing forward. Image 22 shows Mr. Russell speaking to another man. Mr. Russell is shown from the mid-torso up, and his hands are on his hips. The second man is visible in the lower-right corner of the image. He is turned mostly away from the camera. He is wearing glasses and has a goatee. Image 23 shows an unknown man seated next to a little boy. Both people are looking toward the camera. A concrete brick wall is immediately behind the man and boy. Image 24 is very similar to the previous image, but here the boy is taking a bite of something in their right hand and the man is looking over at the boy. Image 25 shows Mr. Russell standing and turned partially toward the left-hand side of the image. He is shown from the mid-calf up.
These images were captured for inclusion with an article concerning Bill Russell, then coach of the Seattle Supersonics, putting on a basketball camp for children. ("Lacey hoop camp fun for Bill Russell," Lacey Leader, 8/18/1976)Made/Created
