2018-017-0001Description
View of Old Main, Saint Martin's College from the College View neighborhood in Lacey, Washington. High-resolution scan of a black and white photographic print. Original print size is 3" x 3". The shot was taken from 1720 Cedar Street (now Gemini Street). The water tower is just barely visible on the campus.
According to the donor, his father, Robert Chamberlain took this photograph, which was part of a series of snapshots he took of the house from various angles. The donor believes the picture was taken in 1960, close to the time the family moved into the house in May. "Dad took the snapshot standing outside the east wall of the house, which also faces roughly north. (The small brick wall feature shown at left extends from the front of the house.) In the yard, near the intersection of Cedar and Sycamore, is a toy car that Dad made for me to "drive" when I was a toddler. The Sycamore street-sign is prominent. Some foliage from the one lone cedar tree, is visible above the eaves in the upper left hand corner of the photo. It's still standing. When I was little, however, based on the perspective I saw, just as the photo shows it, I assumed the water tower stood on the roof of Old Main. I was older, maybe even in my teens, when I got to view the actual features closer up and from other vantages, and figure out what I was in fact seeing. The tower stood a good distance behind Old Main, beyond the newer chapel (ca. 1970) and near some parking spaces next to woods (not as far back as the intersection leading to the cemetery). It's no longer there, pulled down maybe circa 1990 (not remembering exactly).
The street scene is clearly recognizable today, although, of course, houses have been remodeled, yards have been re-landscaped, and trees have grown. Some of the closer cedars shown on the west (left) side of Cedar Street still stand, grown larger; and more trees and other foliage have grown. Therefore Old Main is no longer visible from the corner of Gemini and Sycamore. Some of the woods shown behind houses on the left of the photo remain, but some have given way to the Latter-Day Saints Church on Ruddell Road."
The back side of the photograph was moderately brown-colored due to acid migration. The striped aesthetic suggests that this image was removed from a "magnetic" photo album. It is printed three times with "Kodak Velux Paper."Made/Created
