Description

Unidentified People, 1977. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show two little girls posing in front of many very similar art pieces featuring Santa Claus, a little boy and a little girl putting letters in a mailbox, people on a stage, people acting out a scene, and a man working on a door lock or knob. Image 11a shows two little girls in long dresses with short sleeves standing next to each other with their hands folded in front of them. Hanging on the wall immediately behind these girls are at least four rows of two-dimensional Christmas-themed art pieces. The two bottom rows show very similar illustrations of Santa Claus, and the row above these shows two children and an elf. This image is oriented vertically. The illustrations are likely submissions to the holiday coloring contest put on annually by the Lacey Leader. The two girls are likely the winners of the 1977 contest. Images 12a-13a are very similar to image 11a, but here the images are oriented horizontally. Image 21a shows a little boy and little girl standing next to a large mailbox sitting on a small table. The mailbox reads "SANTA'S MAIL" and "Beta Theta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi." Both of the children are holding an envelope in their hands. The girl is looking at the camera, and the boy is looking at the mailbox. The angle of this image suggests that the photographer was crouching down when it was captured. Image 22a is very similar to the previous image, but here the children are putting their letters in the mailbox. Image 23a is very similar to image 22a, but here the angle of the image suggests that the photographer was standing. Image 27a shows four people on a theater stage. There are quite a few large panels, presumably for creating backdrops, both standing on the stage and in a stack on the stage. The photographer is approximately 40 feet from the stage, so almost the entirety of the stage is visible in this image. Image 28a is very similar to the previous image, but here the four people on stage are grouped around two chairs. Image 29a shows one woman and one man seated in the image foreground. One woman is standing behind them. These people appear to be on the same stage seen in images 27a and 28a. They also appear to be rehearsing a scene. The man is on the left and is writing on a small pad of paper. There is a telephone on a small table between the two seated people. Images 30a-33a are nearly identical to image 29a. Image 34a is similar to the previous images, but here the man is no longer writing on the pad of paper, and the seated woman is gesturing toward the man. Image 35a is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman is reaching over and touching one of the man's hands with both of her hands. Image 36a is very similar to the previous image, but here the seated woman is turned away from the man. Image 44a shows a man in a thin jacket doing some kind of work on a doorknob. He may be trying to pick the lock. Images 1a and 2a are nearly identical to image 44a. The images in group "b" show a man with sideburns standing next to a parked car and a little girl lighting candles. Image 32b shows the man standing next to the car. Only the front half of the car is in the image, and the man is on the far side of this car. He is looking toward the camera. Several other cars are parked in a rough row behind the man. In the left-hand side of the background is a sandwich board sign which reads "USED CARS," "PONDER'S AUTOMART" and "OPEN." A road is visible in the upper-left quadrant of the image. Image 33a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 34b shows a little girl with shoulder-length hair wearing a plaid dress. She is holding one candle and using is to light another candle on a table in front of her. There are cedar branches on the table amongst the candleholders. A Christmas tree is visible in the background. Images 35b through 38b are all nearly identical to image 34b. The images in group "c" show a man and a woman acting out a scene in a play. The set is made to resemble a living room. Image 23c shows the man holding onto the woman. The woman's eyes are open and her knees are bent. She is stepping downward into a recessed portion of the set. It appears that the woman is playing the part of a blind woman. Images 24c and 25c are nearly identical to image 23c. Image 26c shows the woman standing in the kitchen portion of the set and reaching down to touch the dining table. The man is standing to the left of the woman. Image 27c is nearly identical to the previous image. Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
