Description

Bicentennial Celebration, 1976. These eight black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show people inside Marcus Pavilion, a woman putting on a blacksmithing demonstration, a girl holding balloons and walking down a path, a musical performance and children playing outside. Image 17a shows many people inside Marcus Pavilion. The people are on a wide walkway lined on both the left and right by many booths. These booths have drape-like fabric walls which divide them from the adjacent booths. Image 18a shows a woman in pioneer-style dress, including a bonnet, putting on a blacksmithing demonstration. The woman is leaning over a table and there is a hand-cranked blower in the image foreground. Approximately twelve people are watching the demonstration. Image 19a is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman is standing at the blower and appears to be cranking it. Image 20a is nearly identical to image 18a, but here the woman is raising a hammer with her right hand. Image 21a shows a girl wearing a boater hat holding a several balloons and walking down a sidewalk away from the camera. There is a parking lot to the left of the sidewalk. Image 22a is very similar to image 21, but here the photographer has panned toward the right slightly. More of a grassy lawn is visible to the right of the sidewalk. Image 27a shows an older woman in pioneer-style dress, including a bonnet, speaking or singing into a microphone. Image 28a shows approximately nine people in pioneer-style dress holding various musical instruments, and improvised instruments, on a stage. This performance is taking place inside Marcus Pavilion. This image was captured from the right of the performers. Image 29a is very similar to image 28a, but here the photographer has moved out toward the front of the stage. Image 30a shows a shirtless boy rolling or crab-walking across a lawn. Many spectators are watching from the background. Image 31a shows several shirtless boys standing amongst the spectators seen in the previous image. The images in group "b" show children posing together in various configurations for group photos. Image 21b shows five children (four girls and one boy) seated in a row and posing for a group photo. Visible behind the children is a raised platform with several small-scale buildings constructed of cardboard sitting on it. A bulleting board mounted on the wall at the rear of the image shows the text "WILL THE REAL UNCLE SAM PLEASE STAND UP." There are many paper-craft renditions of Uncle Sam's face to the left and right of the text. A sign which reads "BICENTENNIAL 1776-1976" is partially visible at the right-hand side of the image. Image 22b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned toward the right. A closed door is visible near the right-hand side of the image. Image 23b shows two of the children seen in the previous image posing to either side of a Washington State Capitol building model made of cardboard. These two children, one girl and one boy, are kneeling in front of the same platform as seen in the previous two images. A small sign behind and above the capitol model reads "Mrs. Callender's 5th Grade." Image 24b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 25b shows the boy from the previous images standing at the left-and side of the image and two of the girls from the previous images standing at the right-hand side. Between these children is a photo display of various federal government buildings (the White House, the US Capitol building, etc.). Mounted on the wall above and to the left of this display are photos of past US presidents. Image 26b shows two girls kneeling in front of the platform seen in the previous images. Image 28b shows one girl and four boys posing for a group photo in front of a grouping of paper crafts or drawings arranged as in a quilt-like pattern. A sign at the upper-right of the quilt reads "Mrs. Mitchelson's 2nd Grade." Image 28b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 29b is similar to the previous two images, but here a sign reading "BICENTENNIAL 1776-976" is fully visible above the "quilt." Image 30b is very similar to the previous image. The images in group "c" show a person walking on stilts, a man standing on a small platform on the back of a small wagon, and an outdoor crab-walking competition. Image 22c shows a person walking on stilts. This image was captured from the base of the stilts and looking upward toward the person walking on them. This person is wearing a striped hat and striped pants. Image 23c is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 25 shows a man in a cowboy hat standing on a platform on the back of a small wagon. The man appears to be speaking into the handset of a megaphone which is hanging on a strap over his forearm. A small group of boys in Boy Scout uniforms are watching the man. The exterior of Marcus Pavilion is partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 26c is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved closer to the man and Boy Scouts. Image 27c shows 5-6 children participating in a crab walk competition. They are in a large, open lawn. Many spectators are visible at the right-hand side of the image. Image 28c is nearly identical to the previous image. The images in group "d" show man on stilts walking around the Saint Martin's campus. Image 24d shows the man on stilts walking through a parking lot. A fire hydrant is visible in the background. Image 25d is very similar to the previous image, but here a single-storey brick building is visible in the background. Image 26d is similar to the previous two images, but here the man on stilts is walking on a sidewalk between two grassy areas.
