Description

Dracula Play, 1974. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. These images show a production of a stage version of "Dracula" put on at the Abbey Theatre on the Saint Martin's campus by Kenmir-Reinhardt Studios. Image 39a shows a woman with glasses and short hair in a kitchen. She is looking over her right shoulder toward the camera and smiling. She is shown from the mid-torso up. Image 40a shows what appears to be a combined pile of sliced salami and sliced cheese on a table. Image 41a shows a scene from the play "Dracula." A man with shoulder-length hair and a beard wearing a suit (William Lysak) is standing at the left-hand side of the image holding up a crucifix. On the left-hand side of the image is a man wearing a cape and holding the cape up over the lower part of his face (Tom Howdeshell). The man on the left appears to be playing the part of Abraham Van Helsing. The man on the right is playing the part of Count Dracula. Images 42a through 44a and 1a through 3a are nearly identical to image 41a. Image 4a shows a man and woman looking at each other and holding hands. They are both seated on a bench. The man is wearing a short-sleeved, button-up shirt. The woman's hair is worn up and she is wearing a dress with a short cape. The man is likely Tracy Brown Lewis in the role of Jonathan Harker. The woman is likely Delores Talotta in the role of Lucy Seward. Image 5a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 6a is very similar to the two previous images, but here the photographer has zoomed in on the man and woman. Image 7a is nearly identical to image 6a. Image 8a shows the man playing Dracula pretending to bite the neck of the woman playing Lucy Seward. Images 9a through 14a are all very similar to image 8a. The images in group "b" appear to be from a different performance of the same play seen in group "a." These images could also be from a second photographer at the same performance as in group "a." Image 10b shows a man and woman looking at each other and holding hands. Image 11b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed in closer on the two people. Image 12b shows the man dressed as Dracula pretending to bite the neck of the woman playing Lucy Seward. Image 13b is very similar to the previous image. Image 14b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed in closer on the man and woman. A short article on this production also ran in the Daily Olympian. See "Dracula Chillingly Well Done," Daily Olympian, 10/27/1974.
