Description

Hot Summer 105 Degrees, 1977. These two black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show a Bank of Olympia reader board showing a temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit and the time of day (4:35). Various different cars are passing on the road visible in the foreground. All of the scenes are nearly identical aside from the different cars driving by. Image 13a shows a small sports car driving by the sign. Image 14a shows a jeep driving by the sign. Image 15a shows no cars passing the sign. Image 16a also shows no cars driving by, but a woman is visible walking past or out of the bank. Image 17a shows a pickup truck and a 1940s-era car parked in front of the bank. Image 18a shows a station wagon passing the sign. The car and pickup truck are still parked in front of the bank, but mostly obscured by the passing station wagon. The images in group "b" show people in swimsuits in a yard, more shots of cars passing the bank reader board, and shots of a convertible car driving past. Image 16b shows an adult woman and seven children playing in a house's yard. Image 17b shows the bank and read board with no cars passing. Image 18b shows a Ford car driving by the sign. Image 19b shows a hearse driving by the sign. Image Images 20b and 21b show a convertible car driving past the camera. Printed at intervals along the right-hand long sides of both of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
