Unidentified People, 1977. These ten black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using six separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show a man in a baseball cap posing for photos, and various outdoor shots of trains and railroad tracks. Image 33a shows a man wearing a baseball cap and a polo shirt posing for a portrait-style photo. The man is looking toward the image. Image 34a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man is looking off toward the left of the camera. Image 35a shows a portion of a paved road intersection. The shot is angled downward, so the road occupies most of the image frame. Buildings and cars are partially visible in the far back ground at the top of the image. Image 36a is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has panned upward from the roadway. Here the road only occupies the lower 40% of the image. Power lines and poles, cars and buildings are visible in the background. Image 37a shows an outdoor shot of railroad tracks. Two tracks come together to combine in the image foreground and then extend into the distance. Roughly 40 feet from the camera a paved road crosses the railroad track perpendicularly. A car is crossing the frame from left to right on the paved road. Poles with railroad signaling equipment are on either side of the railroad track. Image 38a is very similar to the previous image, but here a station wagon is passing through the image on the paved road from right to left. Image 39a is very similar to the previous two images, but here a car is passing through the image from left to right. Image 40a shows a train locomotive crossing a paved road. Two cars and one pickup truck are parked at the crossing and waiting for the train to pass. Printed on the side of the locomotive is "BURLINGTON NORTHERN" (this is partially obscured by the waiting cars) and "1627." Image 41a is similar to image 40a, but here the train has progressed farther past the waiting cars. Here a train car with "SHOCK CONTROL" printed on the sign is passing in front of the parked cars. A locomotive or caboose is partially visible at the left-hand side of the image. Image 42a is similar to the previous two images, but here a train car with "…THERN" and ""CFIC" printed on the side is crossing in front of the cars. The large side door is open on this car, which is obscuring the first half of the two words, which presumably read "NORTHERN PACIFIC."
The images in group "b" show what appears to be an information fair or similar event regarding space travel and flight in general. Image 5b shows two women standing next to each other and speaking. The woman on the right is wearing glasses and a polka-dotted scarf and is holding a model of a space shuttle. The woman on the left is holding what appears to be a small paper airplane. She has a pair of glasses resting on top of her head. This woman is wearing a name tag which reads "Sharon Smith." Both women are looking at the space shuttle model. These women are in what appears to be a classroom. Several long tables with photos, documents and various other items on them are visible in the background. Image 6b is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman holding the space shuttle model has turned her head and body more toward the camera. Image 7b shows a man in a collared shirt holding up a model of an airplane in his right hand while turning his head to his left to look at the camera. There are two winged pins on the man's shirt: one on the collar and one on the left breast. Image 8b shows one woman standing at center and one man standing at either side of her. All three people are facing toward the camera and have their right hands held up or out in front of them. Two paper airplanes are visible in the air. These three people are in a gymnasium, likely the Capital Pavilion on the Saint Martin's campus. Image 9b shows the man seen in image 7b seated at one of the tables and a standing woman speaking to him. The woman's right arm is held up in the air. There are several rocket models on the table, one of which is approximately four feet tall. Two women and one man are visible in the background. Image 10b shows the woman with glasses and the scarf seen in images 5b and 6b standing on the right-hand side of the image behind a table with many documents spread on it. On the left-hand side of the image are two women and two men. The woman in the scarf is speaking to these four people, and appears to be cupping something small in both hands. Image 11b is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman is gesturing toward two small cups on the table which have liquid in them and a small ball floating on top in each. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 12b is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically.
The images in group "c" show an event held at what appears to be an elementary school. Image 24c shows perhaps a dozen people, most appear to be older adults, standing in a hallway. All of the people are facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Two men to the left of the center of the image are wearing nametags which appear to have a Christian cross or medical cross on them. The names on the tags are not readable. Images 25c and 26c are effectively identical to image 24c. Image 27c shows two women in the image foreground looking at an unknown object held up in one of the women's hands. A third woman looks on from the right-hand side of the image. Beyond the women are children seated in desks and a fourth woman standing at the front of the class. This scene was captured in a classroom. Image 28c shows a man in a suit standing in front of a rectangular sign with large Chinese characters written on it. This man is on the left-hand side of the image. This scene was captured in a hallway. Four other people are relatively near to the man in the suit. All four appear to be looking toward the man in the suit. Image 34c was captured in a paved area outside of the school building. Many adults and children are standing around in groups in the paved area. Images 35c through 38c all show people standing around and talking in the paved area.
The images in group "d" show four young women wearing vests posing together for photos outside of the Olympia Downtown Association building. Image 14d shows the four women standing in a row. They are all wearing matching vests which also all have several matching pins pinned to them. Each young woman is also holding up a pin. At the center each pin is an illustration of sailboats. At the top of the pins is the number 77, and at the bottom is "PATRON." No other text is readable on the pins. The pins may be advertising the 1977 Lakefair, but this is speculation. A large window behind the young women has "OLYMPIA DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION" printed on it. Images 15d through 17d are nearly identical to image 14d. Images 18d and 19d are similar to images 14d through 17d, but here there are only two young women in the images.
The images in group "e" show exterior shots of a single-storey home in a wooded area. Image 40e shows the home. This image was captured from the home's front garden. A bush in the foreground is visible in the bottom-right corner of this image. Image 41e again shows the house, but here the photographer is standing across the road in front of the house. The road is visible in the foreground. Image 42e is very similar to the previous image, but here a car is passing by. Image 43e also shows the house from across the road, but here the photographer has moved to their right by approximately 30-40 feet. Here the photographer is lined up nearly square-on with the front of the house. Image 44e is nearly identical to the previous image.
The images in group "f" show three men playing basketball outside of the Capital Pavilion on the Saint Martin's campus. All of these images (4f through 10f) are effectively identical.Made/Created
