Description

Thurston County Courthouse Construction, 1978. These four black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show scenes from the construction of the Thurston County courthouse built in 1978 (several buildings at different locations had previously served as Thurston County's courthouse). The building shown in these images is located at 2000 Lakeridge Drive SW in Olympia, Washington. Image 21 shows an exterior shot of the courthouse. An open doorway is on the left-hand side of the image. At least one ladder and some other items are visible through the doorway. A row of three windows is on the right-hand side of the image. A piece of staging is partially visible to the right of the windows. Image 22 shows a similar scene to the previous image, but here the photographer has backed away or zoomed out from the building. A second storey is visible in this image. Near the left-hand edge of the image is a piece of equipment on wheels which appears to be a generator. Image 23 shows a grouping of six ceiling light fixtures. The fixtures are rectangular. Three additional light fixtures are partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 34 shows one man who appears to be putting together a desk or portion of a counter inside of a wood-paneled room with a long desk at the far end of the room. The man is on the left-hand side of the image, and only his upper body is visible. A piece of the desk or counter is laying across two sawhorses at the right-hand side of the image. Image 26 shows a small parking lot with several automobiles parked in it. In the bottom-left corner of the image is a small trailer with a barrel in the back. A man is standing next to the small trailer. The parking lot is wet. Image 27 shows the same portion of the parking lot as seen in the previous image, but here the shot is looking through a window on the parking lot. Image 28 shows many large rolls of unknown materials stacked in a room. These rolls appear to be wrapped in paper. A sheet of fiberglass insulation is laying on top of some of the rolls. Image 29 shows an exterior shot of the courthouse building. The building is two storeys, but an entrance to the second storey is on top of a small hill on the right-hand side of the image. There is staging along the wall of the building on the left-hand side of the image. A pickup truck with a canopy is parked in the image foreground. Image 30 shows staging set up on a corner of the building. Image 31 shows the same scene as image 30, but here the photographer has moved closer to the building. The back of the pickup truck is visible in the bottom-left corner of the image. Image 32 shows a fuse box at the center of the image. To the right of the fuse box is a rectangular hole in the wall with electrical wires coming out of it. Image 33 shows a complex series of large pipes with many branches. Image 34 shows the exterior portion of one of the building's entrances. Image 35 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 36 shows a tractor which has a long, rectangular object attached to back. The front of a bulldozer is visible at the bottom-right corner of the image. These two vehicles appear to be preparing a road bed. The courthouse is visible in the background behind a screen of trees. Image 37 shows a similar scene to that shown in the previous image, but here the photographer has panned toward the left. Only the front of the tractor is visible at the right-hand side of the image. Image 38 shows the courthouse up on a hill on the left-hand side of the image. A road passes through the center of the image. This road appears to be Interstate-5. Printed along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
