Description

MAD Festival, Unknown Dates. These seven black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group wll be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, b, etc) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show a man and woman displaying a painting, and several young women participating in the swimsuit portion of a MAD Festival Queen/Miss Thurston County pageant. Image 17a shows a woman at left and a man at right. Each is holding one side of a painting which is held between the two people. This painting is of a bald eagle. There are many other paintings hanging on the wall behind the two people. The man and woman are looking at each other. Image 18a is very similar to the previous image, but here the man and woman are looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 19a shows the woman looking at the man and the man looking at the camera. Image 20a again shows them both looking toward the camera. Image 21a shows a room displaying different pieces of art. At the left-hand side of the image is a table with what appears to be refreshments on it. Image 22a shows three little girls in dance costumes. The girls on the left and right are wearing fringed outfits. The girl at center, who is much smaller than the other two, is wearing a plaid outfit. Image 36a shows two men wearing tuxedos and holding microphones standing in front of the stage at the MAD Festival in the Capital Pavilion. The man on the right is much closer to the camera than the other man. The man on the right is also holding his microphone out in front of him. Image 37a shows only one of the two men in tuxedos. He appears to be singing into the microphone. Image 38a shows a woman performing a ballet routine. She is kicking her right leg toward the camera. Image 39a shows Johnny Lewis wearing a tuxedo on stage. He is holding a microphone stand with both hands and is speaking into the microphone. His band members are visible behind him. This includes, from left to right, a drummer, a keyboard or organ player, and an upright bassist. The images in group "b" show several young women participating in the swimsuit portion of the Miss Thurston County pageant (this pageant was held at the MAD Festival for a number of years). Image 33b shows a young woman wearing a one-piece swim suit. She is shown in profile, and is facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. She is shown from the knees up. A person speaking into a microphone is visible at the right-hand edge of the image frame. Image 34b is effectively identical to the previous image. Image 35b shows the same young woman in profile, but here she is shown from the mid-torso up. Image 36b shows the young woman facing toward the camera. She is again shown from the mid-torso up. Image 37b shows the young woman in profile from the shoulders up. Image 38b shows a different young woman in a one-piece bathing suit. Her body is oriented toward the left-hand side of the image frame, but she is turning her heard to look toward the camera. Her sash reads "MISS SHERATON INN." Image 39b shows a large discoloration obscuring one of the contestants. Image 40b shows a different contestant in a one-piece bathing suit facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. She is shown is profile and from the hip up. Images 41b through 43b are nearly identical to image 40b. The images in group "c" show a woman posing holding a hammer and tongs and preparing to put on a blacksmithing demonstration. Image 30c shows the woman wearing a tunic-like top or dress and a thick apron below the waist. She is holding the hammer and tongs at hip level, There is a tray or box of coals in front of her. Image 31c is very similar to the previous image, but here she is holding the hammer and tongs at waist level. Image 32c shows the woman tying her hair up as she faces toward the camera. Image 33c shows her still tying her hair up, but here she has turned toward the left-hand side of the image frame. She is smiling. Image 34c shows her facing toward the left-hand side of the image while touching a strip of an unknown material wrapped around her right forearm. The images in group "d" show a river and several people building a parade float.Image 16d shows river going over rapids. Image 17d shows a parade float under construction. The float is long and irregularly shaped. It appears to be constructed with a chicken wire frame with two colors of presumably fake flowers covering it. The frame is not completely covered in this image. Several people are visible working on the float. Image 18d shows five young people helping to put together a section of the float. This section is being held upright, and one of the people are standing on a chair to reach the top of the section. Image 19d is similar to the previous image, but here the cameraman has moved to the far side of the group working on the section of float. Image 20d shows a woman with bandana tied over her hair working on the float. Image 21d shows two men in glasses standing on the left-hand side of the image and facing toward the right-hand side of the image. One man is gesturing out in front of himself with his right hand. A portion of the under-construction float is on the right-hand edge of the image.
