MAD Festival, Miss Sheraton Inn, 1976. These nine black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these images will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show a young woman (Kathy Dalton) sitting on a low-lying sign which reads "SHERATON INN." This sign is out in front of the Sheraton Inn hotel, then located at 900 Capitol Way in Olympia Washington. The hotel itself is visible in the background. Ms. Dalton is wearing a floral-print dress and a sash which reads "MISS SHERATON INN." She is also wearing a nametag which reads "KATHY DALTON." Images (11a-12a and 14a-22a) all show Ms. Dalton looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 13a shows her looking off toward the right-hand side of the image.
The images in group "b" show six Miss Thurston County contestants wearing bathing suits and posing for photos. Each is wearing a sash showing their sponsors in the contest. All of these images were captured next to the pool at a hotel. Image 40b shows the contestants standing in a loose group. One of the contestants is walking away from the camera and toward the left-hand side of the image. A woman in a dress is walking past the group of contestants. She is walking away from the camera, and her face is not visible. Image 41b shows three of the contestants walking toward the left-hand side of the image frame. The young woman at the left is only partially within the image frame. The young woman at center's sash reads "MISS BANK OF OLYMPIA." The young woman at left is Kathy Dalton. Her sash reads "MISS SHERATON." Image 42b shows the six contestants standing in a row. They are all smiling and posing for the photos. Image 43b shows the six contestants all seated on one large rock which is embedded into the concrete next to the swimming pool. Images 44b and 1b through 3b are effectively identical to image 43b.
The images in group "c" show two young women swimming in a pool, Kathy Dalton seated alongside a pool and posing for photos, and Kathy Dalton posing for photos with a man in a suit and tie. Image 23c shows two young women swimming toward the camera. Image 24c shows the two young women in the water. The young woman on the left is wiping her eyes/forehead with both hands. Image 25c shows both young women backstroking away from the camera. Image 26c shows Kathy Dalton wearing a swimsuit and a sash which reads "MISS SHERATON." She is seated at the edge of a swimming pool between two large metal handles used for climbing out of the pool. She is looking toward the camera and smiling. Images 27c and 28c are nearly identical to image 26c. Image 29c shows Kathy Dalton, still wearing the swimsuit and sash, seated on a metal poolside table. Standing to the left of Ms. Dalton is a man in a suit and patterned tie. The man is also wearing glasses. Both are posing for the photo and smiling. Image 30c is nearly identical to the previous image.
The images in group "d" show a woman playing a grand or baby grand piano inside the Capital Pavilion, a young woman performing a fire dance, and a man (Dick Pust) in a tuxedo speaking into a microphone. Image 10d shows a young woman playing a grand or baby grand piano on the basketball court at the Capital Pavilion. Images 11d through 17d show various stages of a dance routine performed with a flaming baton. Image 18d shows Dick Pust speaking into a microphone. It is unclear if either of the young women show in the images in group "d" are Kathy Dalton.
At the time of the creation of this record (3/4/2019), a Marriott hotel is located on the former site of the Olympia Sheraton Inn.Made/Created
