Description

MAD Festival, Unknown Dates. These six black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using five separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in groups a,b,c and e were all captured in the Capital Pavilion on the Saint Martin's campus. The images in group "a" show a man playing an accordion, and Johnny Lewis and an unknown man standing together on stage. Image 6a shows the man playing an accordion. The man is wearing glasses and has a goatee. Here the man is visible from the knees up. Image 7a shows the man playing accordion from the hips up. Johnny Lewis is visible in the background along the right-hand corner of the image. Image 8a shows Johnny Lewis at right wearing a tuxedo with a frilled shirt. At left is a balding man in a plaid blazer. This man is speaking into a microphone. This image is oriented vertically. Image 9a is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented horizontally. The images in group "b" shows two men dancing with two women is floor-length formal gowns on the basketball court at Capital Pavilion. Image 28b shows the two couples dancing together. A small crowd of people are visible seated on the left-hand side of the image frame. A portion of the stage and a portion of a piano are visible along the right-hand edge of the image. Image 29b is very similar to the previous image, but here the dancers are closer to the camera and the camera has panned to the right. Here the stage and piano are fully visible. A man working a sound board is visible in the background near the right-hand edge of the image. Image 30b shows a closer-up view of one of the two couples dancing. The stage is fully visible behind the two people. A live band is playing on stage. The images in group "c" show a young woman playing a set of bagpipes, and a group of girls performing a ballet routine. Image 4c shows a young woman wearing a kilt and playing a set of bagpipes. She is walking toward the right-hand side of the image. Several men, including Johnny Lewis, are standing and talking to each other on the stage. Image 5c shows four girls performing a ballet dance number. Image 6c shows approximately 14 girls and young women performing a ballet dance. The images in group "d" show Johnny Lewis wearing a jacket over a dress shirt and tie and posing for portrait-style photos. In all of these images Mr. Lewis is looking toward the camera and smiling, and he is shown from the chest-up. Images 12d and 13d show Mr. Lewis with his torso turned partially toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Images 14d and 15d show Mr. Lewis with his torso turned partially toward the right-hand side of the image frame. The image in group "e" (5e) shows a man and a woman performing a dance routine. The woman is doing the splits and bending over backward to look at the camera. The man has both arms out to his sides in a dramatic flourish.
