Description

Miss Washington Wheelchair, 1975. These two black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a young woman in glasses wearing a tiara and a formal dress with a matching fur-fringed cape. She is shown getting out of a car's passenger seat and into a wheelchair, as well as looking at and touching a structural metal pole. These images may have been captured for an article dealing with ADA access. These images do not have any physical numbers along the edges, so the images will be assigned numbers. The numbers will start at 1 with the image of the young woman in the wheelchair on a sidewalk from right to left, and move from left to right, finishing with the image of the young woman touching the metal pole and looking over her right shoulder toward the camera. Image 1 shows the young woman going down a road or sidewalk in the wheelchair. She is facing toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 2 shows the young woman sitting in the passenger seat of a car with the passenger door open. She is looking at the camera. The empty wheelchair is immediately outside of the open car door. Image 3 is similar to the previous image, but here the young woman is preparing to move from the passenger seat and into the wheelchair. Image 4 is effectively identical to image 3. Image 5 shows the steering wheel of a car. There is an object, approximately one foot in length, extending horizontally below the steering wheel. This object may be an assistive device allowing those without use of their legs to drive a car. Image 6 shows a metal pole crossing the image vertically at its center. The young woman is just beyond the pole facing toward the camera ans smiling. A pickup truck is partially visible in the background. Image 7 is very similar to the previous image, but here the young woman is looking at the pole. Image 8 shows the young woman touching the pole. She is also shown from the side, and is looking over her right shoulder toward the camera.
