Description

Unidentified People, Unknown Dates. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show a man posing with a bicycle, and this same man posing with a man and a woman. All of these images were captured in a yard adjacent to a brick building. Image 8a shows the man seated on the bicycle. He is wearing a short-sleeved, button-up shirt and corduroy pants. The man is facing toward the camera and the bicycle is oriented toward the camera. Image 9a is similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved nearer to the man, and to the man's left. The man is looking toward the camera. Image 10a is very similar to image 8a, but here the photographer is closer to the man but still immediately in front of the bicycle. The man is holding one or more paper documents in his right hand. Image 11a shows the man on the bike, but here the photographer is immediately toward the man's left. The man is looking to his left toward the camera. The brick building is partially visible in the background. Image 12a is similar to image 11a, but here a woman in a blazer and a skirt and a man in a blazer, tie and slacks are also in the image. The woman is on the left, the man in the jacket and tie is at center and the man on the bicycle is on the right. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 13a is very similar to the previous image, but here the image is oriented vertically. Images 14a through 16a are very similar to image 13a, but here the photographer has moved to their left and panned to the right slightly. The brick building is not visible in the background. Image 17a is effectively identical to image 12a. Image 18a is effectively identical to image 13a. The images in group "b" show a small building next to train tracks and a train. Image 7b shows a small building with a square or rectangular floorplan and a pyramidical roof. The building has peeling paint The door to the building is open and a window to the left of the door is boarded up. The camera is looking square-on at the front of the building. Train tracks are visible along the bottom of the image. Image 8b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has moved to their right by approximately 12 feet. The front and right-hand side wall of the building are visible in this image. Image 9b shows a locomotive pulling train cars. Image 10b looks underneath several rows of train cars. Images 11b and 12b are nearly identical to the previous image. Image 13b shows the space between two of the train cars. The linkage between the cars is visible at the bottom of the image. Trees and a field are visible in the background. Image 14b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 15b shows a portion of the side of a locomotive. Printed on the side of the locomotive is "UNION PACIFIC." Image 16b shows what appears to be a platform on the train tracks. "DO NOT HUMP" is printed on the edge of the platform. A flag which reads "STOP" is hanging off of the platform. Image 17b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 18b shows the interior of a small building which is likely the same building seen in images 7b and 8b. An opened door is visible on the right-hand side of the image. The walls have wainscoting. A sign visible at the top-center of the image states that there is no longer passenger train service from that location. The images in group "c" show two young women and one young man holding telephone handsets to their ears. A second, shorter young man is holding the cradle-portion of one of the phones. These people appear to be pretending to talk on the phone. What appears to be a stage curtain occupies the background, suggesting that these images show a scene from a theater play or an advertisement for a theater play. All of the images (16c-24c) are effectively identical. The images in group "d" show a man posing for portrait-style photos, a man and child in a bakery, a woman (Rhonda Whisenant) holding a jar above a cake, and Ms. Whisenant speaking to a man. Image 43d shows a man with glasses, medium-length hair and sideburns posing for a portrait-style photo. He is wearing a jacket over a vest, which is in turn over a tie and button-up shirt. He is looking toward the camera and laughing. Images 44d, 1d and 2d are effectively identical to image 43d. Image 3d shows a little boy wearing a coat over a striped shirt looking toward the camera. He is holding the hand of a man in a plaid shirt. The man's head is mostly beyond the top edge of the image frame. A display of bred products is visible along the wall in the background. Image 4d shows a woman with her hair tied back wearing an apron over a turtleneck sweater holding a jar above a cake. The woman is wearing a nametag which reads "RHONDA WHISENANT" and "SAFEWAY." The woman appears to be pretending to pour sprinkles or some other topping onto the cake. Image 5d is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer has zoomed out from the woman somewhat. Here the display case the woman is standing behind is more visible in the image. Image 6d is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman is turning her head and laughing. Image 7d is effectively identical to image 4d. Image 8d shows Ms. Whisenant speaking to a man wearing a jacket over a tie and button-up shirt. Ms. Whisenant is on the right and the man is on the left. Both are shown in profile. A sign advertising Dutch Apple Pie is partially visible behind the man. Images 9d and 10d are nearly identical to the previous image. Printed along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
