Description

MAD Festival, 1976. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show people engaged in various activities at the 1976 Music, Art and Dance Festival in Lacey, Washington. Image 1 shows a man with a mustache hugging an approximately 8-foot tall novelty Rainier Beer bottle. Several other men are standing nearby. Image 2 shows a woman wearing a fringed bra and long skirt performing a dance, presumably a belly dance. Image 3 shows several women dressed similarly to the woman in the previous image performing in front of an audience. The dancers are turned away from the camera. Image 4 shows the audience. Image 5 shows three women in belly-dancing costumes standing on a platform and holding out in front of themselves what appear to be candleholders or drinking glasses. Image 6 is extremely underexposed and nearly blank. Images 8 and 9 show one of the women dancing. Image 10 is blank. Image 11 shows four people seated in the back of a fire engine. Image 12 shows several people on what appears to be the back of the fire engine. Image 13 again shows people in the fire engine. Image 14 shows a dog on the fire engine. Image 15 shows a little girl sitting in the rumble seat of a 1930s-era car. Image 16 shows four fire engines parked haphazardly. Image 17 shows many early cars parked in a long line. Image 18 shows three men, one woman and two little boys riding in a convertible with the top off. Image 19 shows Mark Brown seated in the passenger seat of one of the fire engines and holding a pen and notepad. A number of other people are climbing around on the fire engine. Image 20 shows a baby and an adult in the cab of what is likely a fire engine. An emblem on the door of the fire engine, of which only the top is visible, reads "LEWIS CO." The arm of a second adult can be seen resting on the bottom of the open car window on the far side of the cab. Image 21 shows six people standing or sitting in the bed of a pickup truck. All but one of them are wearing a t-shirt which reads "MUSTER FEVER." Image 22 shows two men in conductor hats sitting in the open cab of what is presumably an early automobile. Only the top of the front end of the vehicle is visible in this image. Image 23 shows many fire engines arranged in a line. Several people are standing on the running boards of each fire engine. Image 24 shows a woman, a man and a baby sitting alongside a road as the column of fire engines approaches. Image 25 shows a man in a firefighter's uniform and holding a baby. Image 26 is effectively identical to the previous image. Image 27 shows a fire engine with approximately a dozen people riding on it. A banner on the side of the fire engine reads "FIRE 10 MUSTER TEAM" and "MULTNOMAH COUNTY." Image 28 shows several people riding on a different fire engine with a banner on the side which reads "ANTICIPATION HOSE CO." Image 29 shows many children riding in the back of a fire engine which reads "CANBY FIRE DEPT" on the side. Image 30 shows many men and at least one child standing around in running attire. Image 31 is effectively identical to the previous image. Image 32 shows the men running. Image 33 shows a blurry shot of one man running past some other people. Images 34 and 35 each show a different man crossing the finish line in a race. Image 36 shows a railroad car converted into a stage. Several people are on the stage.
