Description

MAD Festival, 1976. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show people engaged in various activities at the 1976 Music, Art and Dance Festival in Lacey, Washington. Image 1 shows two men sitting on the edge of a platform in front of a small crowd of people. One of the men on the platform appears to be reading a document to the crowd. Image 2 shows a team of five women engaged in a bucket line race The woman farthest toward the left is dipping a bucket into a large metal tub. Water is splashing up in the air from the tub. Images 3 through 6 are effectively identical to image 2. Image 7 shows a person in a long jacket sitting on a bail of hay. A child is kneeling down in front of the person on the hay bail. A long line of people are visible beyond the person on the hay bail. Image 8 shows a crowd of people. Most are seated. Image 9 shows a vendor stall selling t-shirts and food. The vendor stall is under a large umbrella. Image 10 shows a person's back. The back of the person's shirt reads "THURSTON 2 TWO TOO MUSTER." Image 11 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 12 shows four men standing behind the counter of a vendor stall. A sign across the top of the vendor stall reads "BEER HALL." Image 13 shows a woman plunging a bucket into a large metal tub of water. The woman is facing away from the camera. Image 14 shows a woman holding a bucket. Images 15 -17 show women participating in a bucket line race. Image 18 shows three men working on/looking at what appears to be a pump. Image 19 shows a man in a running outfit reaching out to take something from a man on the stage. Images 20-22 show a group of adults and children posing together for group photos. The Old Main building on the Saint Martin's campus is visible in the background. Image 23 shows several people on a stage made out of a converted railroad car. One of the people is talking into a microphone. Several men are gathered in front of the stage. Image 24 shows four men pulling a hose cart. Image 25 shows a man on the stage holding a snowboard and some pieces of paper. Several other men on the stage are looking over at him. Image 26 shows four men about to pull a hose cart across a starting line or a finish line. Image 27 shows two men laying in the middle of the street and holding down a spraying fire hose. Images 28 through 30 are nearly identical to image 26. Image 31 shows three men standing along a fence. Image 32 shows a crowd of people gathered under a very large umbrella. Image 33 shows less people gathered under the umbrella. Image 34 shows small children wearing adult-sized firefighter's pants preparing to race. Images 35 and 36 show the race in progress.
