MAD Festival, 1976. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show people engaged in various activities at the 1976 Music, Art and Dance Festival in Lacey, Washington. All of these images were captured in the Capital Pavilion (later called the Marcus Pavilion) on the Saint Martin's campus. Note that these contact prints were produced with images 1 and 2 coming immediately after image 12. It is unclear why they were laid out in this way.
Image 1 shows two men shaking hands. The man shaking hands on the left has a beard and is wearing a plaid shirt. The man on the right is wearing glasses and a blazer. He is speaking into a microphone and holding a trophy. A man and a woman, both wearing shorts, are standing to the left of the man with the beard. Image 2 is similar to the previous image, but here the bearded man is holding the trophy and speaking into the microphone. Also, an additional man in shorts is visible at the far left-hand side of this image. Image 3 shows two men in shorts and matching t-shirts running. The man on the left is holding a trophy up near his head as he runs, and the trophy is mostly obscuring his face. This man may be Mark Brown. There is text on this man's shirt, and the part which is visible reads "LACEY MAD CAP." Image 4 is similar to image 2. The bearded man in the plaid shirt is on the far right-hand side of the image, has his hands on his hips and is speaking to three men and one woman, all wearing shorts. Image 5 shows a young woman in a formal dress singing into a microphone. Image 6 is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman is looking toward the camera. Image 7 shows a young woman wearing a formal dress and tiara holding a violin. Image 10 shows a young woman wearing a leotard with her arms held out to her sides. Image 11 appears to show someone on a stage, but the image is very underexposed, making it difficult to make out. Images 12-17 all show one or more young women performing dance routines on a stage. More details are difficult to make out because all of the images are underexposed. Images 23 through 26 show a young women in a formal dress singing into a microphone. Images 27 and 28 shows sections of the audience at the festival. Image 29 shows three men and three women seated on folding chairs. A boy is partially visible in the lower-left corner of the image. Image 30 shows three men standing together and posing for a photo. The man at center wearing the tie and blazer is Ken Balsley. Image 31 shows a man in a sailor's costume and a woman in a dress posing together for a photo. Image 32 shows the man in the sailor's costume singing into a microphone on stage. Image 33 is very similar to the previous image, but here the man has been joined by a woman at either side. Both women are wearing matching dresses and are also singing into microphones. Both women are looking out toward the audience and have one arm raised to their sides. Image 34 is very similar to image 33, but here both women are turned to face the man in the sailor costume. Image 35 is similar to the previous image, but here the two women are leaning on the man's shoulders. Image 36 shows the man in the sailor outfit standing behind what appears to be a puppet-show "stage." This stage has an open frame at the top which the upper half of the man's body can be seen through. His legs are obscured behind a box-like section at the bottom of the stage. Image 37 is similar to the previous image, but here the two women can be seen standing to the right of the man in the sailor costume.Made/Created
