Description

MAD Festival, 1976. These six black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show people engaged in various activities at the 1976 Music, Art and Dance Festival in Lacey, Washington. These images were all captured outdoors on the Saint Martin's campus. Image 2 shows several people on a stage made from a converted railroad car. A man with a beard wearing a hat is on the far left and is the closest person to the camera. To the right of this man is a man wearing sunglasses and a cowboy hat. This man is sitting down on the stage and speaking into a microphone. Both men are looking at the camera. Other people are visible on the stage in the background. Image 3 shows a 1930s-era fire engine driving down a road toward the camera. The Old Main building on the Saint Martin's campus is visible in the background. A young spectator is occupying the bottom-right quadrant of the image. This spectator is wearing a baseball cap and is facing away from the camera. Image 4 shows three adults doing something to the nozzle of a fire hose, which is laying on the road. Image 5 shows these same three people all and their hands and knees and holding down the fire hose. Here the hose is spraying. Image 6 shows many, many trophies set up on a picnic table. Image 7 shows a person in a visor facing away from the camera. The back of their t-shirt reads "FULLY INVOLVED." A woman who is mostly obscured behind the first woman is facing the camera and has a portion of an uncharged fire hose over her shoulder. Image 8 shows the two people from the previous image doing something to the nozzle of the fire hose. Image 9 shows three women holding down a spraying fire hose. Image 10 shows a man operating a television camera. Image 11 shows a portion of the audience at this event. Image 12 shows approximately twelve people either sitting or standing on the stage. Image 13 shows a group of approximately six people gathered in a tight circle near the front of the fire engine. The image is blurry, so it is difficult to make out details in the image. Image 14 shows three people holding the end of a spraying fire hose. Image 15 shows the fire engine driving past the stage. Two people in the cab are looking toward the camera. Painted on the passenger door of the engine is "THURSTON COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION DIST. 2." A sign which appears to be painted on a piece of cardboard is taped to the side of the fire engine. This sign reads "I SUPPORT FPD #5 MUSTER TEAM" and "MASON COUNTY." An illustration of a firefighter and a bucket are also on the sign. Image 17 shows a woman holding a small child amongst the spectators. Image 18 shows a man doing something at the back end of the fire engine. Image 19 shows three men holding the end of a fire hose. Image 20 shows two men holding the end of a spraying fire hose. Image 21 shows spectators an participants in the fire hose-related competition. Images 22 through 37 show people participating in the fire hose competition, and people watching the competition. Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
